You’ve made a discovery – a Golden Helles from the original Lager House build by Christian Moerlein in Cincinnati’s Brewery District over 150 years ago. Today, Moerlein Lager House is brewed to the same standards that declared it the first American Brew to pass the Reinheitsgebot Purity Law. This Munchner-styled Helles is a balanced lager featuring a lightly toasted, yet defined malt character and a touch of hops for a clean finish. Moerlein Helles features a deep golden color, 2-row and Munich malt, Hersbrucker hops, averages 5.2% alcohol by volume with an original gravity of 13 and bitterness units of 19.

Labeled as Christian Moerlein Original Lager. Slightly skunky aroma, a bit of syrup at the beginning and ending with a dry finish. Cold, it has an acceptable bit of sweetness and crispness. Goes downhill towards the middle and end of the glass.

A clear straw golden color with a white head that had good retention and hardly any lace. Aroma was mild, soft biscuit like notes. Flavor was mostly bread-like but did have a nice subtle bitterness to it in the finish. Nice and balanced and crisp in the finish.

b3shine (8194) - Indiana, USA - JAN 29, 2013
Bottle (labeled Christian Moerlein Original Lager) to half-pint (shared with the Mrs.). Looks solid; a transparent gold with white lacing. Smells doughy and mildly bitter, toasty, and skunky, although not in a bad way. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. An easy-drinking beer, and a solid example of the style.

RedSox2004 (1686) - Pacific Palisades, California, USA - JAN 25, 2013
Label says Christian Moerlein Original Lager. Crystal clear golden yellow with a smallish head and moderate lace. Bready malt aromas mix with modest grassy hops and hints of lemon and spice. Nice balance of the doughy malt and a slight bitterness from the hops. Light body, lively carbonation, soft mouthfeel and a crisp clean finish.

Crystal clear, straw with no head. Slightly sweet aroma. Crisp light bodied, with refreshing but barely noticeable aftertaste. Enjoyably light as by design.

Draft. Clear golden color with white, lacey head. It’s a lager. Not offensive, not amazing. Pretty much in line with the food it’s paired with.

Aroma of hay, slight toast and light fruit esters (apple, white grape). Appearance is royal gold with white head. Flavor matches the nose; the palate is bubbly. Pretty much on style, but a solid brew.

Sheerbrewing (117) - Athens-Columbus, Ohio, USA - SEP 18, 2012
Pours a golden pale with a little haze and a thin white head. Aroma is light toasty malt, bready with biscuit and toffee. Flavor is clean lots of malt just like aroma would suggest toasty malt and more biscuit comes through, there is light hop character but not much. Overall I like the toasted malt flavor that is going on in this beer it is refreshing and drinkable, this is my first helles so I’m not sure how to style this brew is but it is not bad either way.

Not a big fan of this one, though I made the mistake of drinking this beer in the same session as a Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold... seems, in retrospect, an unfair pairing. This beer is weak by comparison, overly sweet, lacking body and without a distinguishing hop bite.

12 oz bottle pours golden with a white head. Aroma of malt, grass and yeast. Taste of sweet malt and a bit of bitterness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
