You’ve made a discovery – a Golden Helles from the original Lager House build by Christian Moerlein in Cincinnati’s Brewery District over 150 years ago. Today, Moerlein Lager House is brewed to the same standards that declared it the first American Brew to pass the Reinheitsgebot Purity Law. This Munchner-styled Helles is a balanced lager featuring a lightly toasted, yet defined malt character and a touch of hops for a clean finish. Moerlein Helles features a deep golden color, 2-row and Munich malt, Hersbrucker hops, averages 5.2% alcohol by volume with an original gravity of 13 and bitterness units of 19.

Draft. Poured a clear pale gold with a medium-sized head that dissipated quickly. Aroma and flavor were bready malt, some grassy hops. Light mouthfeel. Not terribly memorable.

Bottle. Golden color with a medium head. Aroma is much like an American pale lager. Taste, also like an American lager, a good American lager.

Bottled as "Original Lager". This beer pours a clear golden color with a medium thin and fizzy white head that burns away steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of bready malt and mild hops. Light body with flavors of sweet malt and grassy hops. The finish is short and mildy bitter with a hoppy aftertaste. Average overall.

Draft. Clear golden with a small ring of bubbles. Nose is corn, honey, dry grass and light citrus. Flavor is the same. Light-medium body is lightly tingly, smoothly carbonated and well-balanced.

Pours clear and golden with a small head. Not a huge aroma for this one. It has a moderately bitter taste that sticks with you for a while.

Had on tap. Appearance is a slightly hazy dark gold with a tiny wispy head. Picked up a slightly floral hop note from the smell but not really much else. Flavor was somewhat sweet with a light bready grain. A little bit of floral hops but just a very light bitterness. Just not a whole lot going on. Overall I was a little disappointed with this beer. All the flavors were somewhat muted and it was really boring. Not sure I would seek out again.

Bottle. Pours a clear, watery golden, with little head. Aroma is a bit skunky. Taste is not quite as bad because the wateriness masks most of the skunk flavor. Not much to report here.

355ml twist-off. It pours a clear gold with a frothy white head that leaves some decent lacing. Smell isn’t like a true helles. More like an APL. The yeast is uncontrolled. The flavor is sweet and yeasty. A bit of noble hops. Really not typical for the style.

I don’t know if this benefited from lowered expectations, but I kind of enjoyed this. It was slightly cloudy gold, with a sloppy white head. Smells like fresh bread, with a touch of hops. Flavor is bread, with a touch of corn, and a crisp finish.
