You’ve made a discovery – a Golden Helles from the original Lager House build by Christian Moerlein in Cincinnati’s Brewery District over 150 years ago. Today, Moerlein Lager House is brewed to the same standards that declared it the first American Brew to pass the Reinheitsgebot Purity Law. This Munchner-styled Helles is a balanced lager featuring a lightly toasted, yet defined malt character and a touch of hops for a clean finish. Moerlein Helles features a deep golden color, 2-row and Munich malt, Hersbrucker hops, averages 5.2% alcohol by volume with an original gravity of 13 and bitterness units of 19.

Pours a nice golden color with a white head. Aroma is caramel, honey, vanilla, a touch of toast, and some spicy hops. Flavor is honey, caramel, some vanilla, toast, and light bitter earthy spicy finish.

Pours honey golden with a small off white head. Aroma is bready malts. Flavor is the same. Not bad, I think I like the old Moerlein stuff better though, especially considering how much cheaper it used to be.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2009 12 oz. bottle from Baba Budan’s in Cincinnati. Gold pour with a little haze and no head. Aroma of straw, hops, malt, and yeast. Flavor follows suit. The straw aroma and flavor were surprisingly dominant in this one. Light body, and very active carbonation. Dry and crisp with a mild hop aftertaste. Second rating (up from 2.9).

Sweet, graham malt aroma, smells like a central European lager. Honey gold, fair label, appearance ding for the twistoff. Lightly sweet, but mostly crackery and dry, nutty grain flavors. Reasonably crisp. Medium body with good carbonation. A respectable choice.

Aroma is citrus, and biscuit malts. Flavor is tea, slight peppery spice. A biscuity malt body, a crispy clean finish. This is a damn good beer. Perfect for a hot day. Wheres my chair and umbrella??

Poured clear gold with a super short, fizzy white head. Aroma is grainy, malty and a bit corny. The flavor has a decent malt profile. A bit of bread and spice. Thin mouthfeel. Pretty clean finish.

Bottle… Clear yellow lager with a small, fizzy, white head that disappears in a flash. The aroma is restrained and hard to figure out – maybe due to there being no lasting head. After a vigorous swirl, I am finally able to conjure up some notes of honey and toasted biscuit. Medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Very decently balanced. Grainy, biscuity, honey-malt sweetness held in check by peppery hop bitterness. Somewhat crisp, clean finish that dries way out.

12oz bottle. Pours a clear coppery gold with minimal quickly-diminishing head and some lacing. Light aroma, slightly malty or grassy, perhaps some tea as well. Medium to light body, smooth, slightly carbonated. Finishes only slightly bitter. Easy to drink, perhaps better for hot weather. Would not buy again.

PorterPounder (5541) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - DEC 21, 2008
Tallahassee, Fl. - ABC Liquors - 12 oz bottle. Pours a medium golden with just a slight bit of murkiness to it - faint white head. Grainy, cereal-like aroma with some wort-like essence. Flavor has some corn cereal notes, some bready-toasty hints and some dry notes in the finish. Medium thick mouthfeel - leans to the dry side.

12oz bottle from a Moerlein mixed 12pack bought in Kentucky. Sweet brewery malt aroma. Orange tan color, slightly hazy, but mostly clear. Mild crisp hoppiness up front and a smooth, sweet malty finish. A little thicker and richer than a typical German example. Pretty good session beer.
