You’ve made a discovery – a Golden Helles from the original Lager House build by Christian Moerlein in Cincinnati’s Brewery District over 150 years ago. Today, Moerlein Lager House is brewed to the same standards that declared it the first American Brew to pass the Reinheitsgebot Purity Law. This Munchner-styled Helles is a balanced lager featuring a lightly toasted, yet defined malt character and a touch of hops for a clean finish. Moerlein Helles features a deep golden color, 2-row and Munich malt, Hersbrucker hops, averages 5.2% alcohol by volume with an original gravity of 13 and bitterness units of 19.

Pour Form a 12 oz bottle. Deep gold color with a white head that soon dissipates. Pleasant aroma of malt and flowery hops. Flavor is an exceptionally good balance of sweet light malts with a distinctive hops bitterness. Fine finish with an excellent hops smack on the back of the tongue and lingering, pleasant, bitterness. Good mouthfeel with active carbonation. I picked up a 6 pack of this while passing through Cincinnati recently. A very good, very solid brew. Will have to look for it here in Michigan.

Unfortunately I didn’t take good tasting notes beyond the numbers for this puppy.

12oz twist-off bottle. Golden pale color. Aroma of skunky hops. Cold, cool and crisp. Refreshing malt. Followed up by a bold hop bite. A very nice session beer. yum to Lagers.

Appearance: Pours out a clear, yellow body with a thin, white head. Simple and honest, do if I had a lovely, scantily-clad assistant to shout "ta-da!" I may be more enthusiastic. Smell: A bit of a weak nose, really, with only mild, transient notes of lightly toasted malts, floral hops, and thinly sliced apples. Taste: All the light pale maltiness one would expect as well as a thin trace of toasted breadiness and slight honeyish sweetness. Fruity spritz of Yellow Delicious Apple juice. Floral German hops with a light bitterness. The finish is appropriately drying, but kind of empty in terms of taste, like a movie that ends oddly abruptly. Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium-low carbonation. Drinkability: A fine, serviceable lager when it comes to light, easy drinking, but, for me, I’m left wanting just a skosh more in the flavor and aroma department. Next time I’d like to see a little more, Moerlein.

Pours honey golden with a small off white head. Aroma is bready malts. Flavor is the same. Not bad, I think I like the old Moerlein stuff better though, especially considering how much cheaper it used to be.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2009 12 oz. bottle from Baba Budan’s in Cincinnati. Gold pour with a little haze and no head. Aroma of straw, hops, malt, and yeast. Flavor follows suit. The straw aroma and flavor were surprisingly dominant in this one. Light body, and very active carbonation. Dry and crisp with a mild hop aftertaste. Second rating (up from 2.9).

Sweet, graham malt aroma, smells like a central European lager. Honey gold, fair label, appearance ding for the twistoff. Lightly sweet, but mostly crackery and dry, nutty grain flavors. Reasonably crisp. Medium body with good carbonation. A respectable choice.

Aroma is citrus, and biscuit malts. Flavor is tea, slight peppery spice. A biscuity malt body, a crispy clean finish. This is a damn good beer. Perfect for a hot day. Wheres my chair and umbrella??

Poured clear gold with a super short, fizzy white head. Aroma is grainy, malty and a bit corny. The flavor has a decent malt profile. A bit of bread and spice. Thin mouthfeel. Pretty clean finish.
