3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle:   Black, thin to moderate frothy sandy head, spotty lacing.   Citrus peel and roasted malt nose.   A little candied and sweet.   Pine, citrus pith and peel, with soft roasted malts on the tongue.   Had I not looked at the beer, had it in the dark, I might not think Black IPA at all.   Seems like a respectable Double IPA.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Pale roast, stronger pith/peel citrus bits on the exit.   Mild to moderate sweetness.   Good quaffer!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
22oz bottle, great thanks to MikedR. Black body. Good thin light brown head. Good lace. Nice nose of earthy and herbal hops, chocolate, and roasty malts. Bigger body, though not as big as the ABV would suggest. Good chocolate malt, roasty flavor. Nice herbal and earthy hop in the flavor, again. Good toasty malts, light roast. Little coffee, good bitter dark chocolate. Nice longer chocolatey roasty mildly herbal hoppy aftertaste. Good smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Nice bitter and sweet taste, not too much in either direction, though. It’s impressive how well-masked the 10% ABV is. Very easy to drink, tasty, even. Barely a hint of alcohol. My kind of black IPA. Great! Easy to drink! Delicious! Thank you Mike!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured from a 22 ounce bottle thanks to mikedr. Pours a near black with a large froth of khaki colored foam. The aroma has lots of simcoe dankness and resinous pine. Taste is bitter up front, but moves on to a sweet, toffee like profile. Alcohol is well hidden.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle, from PHX. Pure awesome. Chocolate & malt on the nose, smells like an imperial stout. Pours black, light head. Could use slightly more hops on the flavor, but that’s being picky. Awesome beer.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Really interesting. From a 22 oz. bottle from Total Wine, pours deep brown/black into a chilled pint glass. Initially it had no head so I thought something was wrong, but it developed a stout-like head that lasted a little bit. Aroma is medium-level: hops, but more. Flavor is hops, molasses, stout-like, and a lingering flavor of maltiness in the mouth. A lot of flavors here. Thick on the palate. Poured the rest into a tulip glass and got more flavor and aroma: some chocolate as it warms. Really good one.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 oz. bottle from Total Wine (Park Place) - Pours a deep brown color with a solid one finger thick tan head. very light spotty lacing. Aroma is toasted malt with hints of chocolate and herbal hops. Flavor is toasted malt, esters, and herbal hops. the malt lingers in the finish. Medium body. I expected more of a hop presence, still it was a good beer. Alcohol is fairly well hidden. A nice beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: SEP 29, 2012 A vigorous pour into my Bruery Tulip produces a three-finger thick, brown tinged, dark tan colored head. The beer is a concentrated brown color that shows a clear, dark plum / concentrated-burnt-amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma has a dirty hoppiness to it that might be accentuated by a hint of diacetyl (though in hindsight, this last is likely just more dank hop character); dank, herbaceous, with lots of skunky “hemp”, a big woody peppery notes, an almost caraway like note, . Backing notes of tangelo zest, roasted whole grain notes, a floral citrus character, and a touch of tropical fruit character that leans towards lychee, perhaps kumquat, and a touch of peach.
Lots of fruity hop character is evident up front, as the beer moves across the tongue it picks up a smooth roasted grain character, a herbal hop character, some peppery hemp like notes, a woody pine character, a chalky dark malt character, and a nice chocolate flavor that lightly influences the finish. The fruit character contributes flavors of tangelo, ample peach notes, some lychee, a smooth kumquat zest note, and lots of floral citrus notes. The bitterness here is quite smooth; some of it is contributed by the roast malt character, the rest by the hop character, but it is really quite smooth, but with just enough bite to keep things anchored here. The body of this beer is fairly light for a Double, it has the quaffability that it needs, and has the viscosity it needs to support the ample hop character.
The aroma definitely captures the beers title quite well, the flavor is a touch less dank, and more fruit focused, this makes the beer a bit more likeable for me, though it loses a bit of skunkiness, but it is still sufficiently dank. I really like how smooth the roast malt character is here; it is well done, and allows the hop character to shine through quite well. This is a beer that is more than a sum of its parts, the combination just really works for me, and this is way better than I was expecting; especially since I was worried about the provenance and age of this beer..
