Odd, the description of the style does not match this beer... So why bother describe the style if your beer is going to taste otherwise...? Pours black (duh) with a small tan head. Aroma is somewhat hoppy with citrus, grapefruit but I’d say the malty burnt tones are what comes out strongest. Taste is medium bitter with quite a bit of coffee present. It’s definitely more towards a porter or stout than towards a black IPA in my book. Mouthfeel is medium, finish quite long and bitter (again, more coffee bitter than hop bitter).

Very nice hoppy aroma. This IPA is black like a stout but with a taste of a nice IPA. Foam is white/light brown and stays for a while.. Very nice beer from Mohawk.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Svesse (5207) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - JAN 12, 2012
(Bottle) Reddish brown colour with lasting, beige head, leaving traces of lacing. Roasted, hoppy nose with notes of dried fruit, chocolate, rye bread, pine needles, citrus and a hint of liquorice. Roasted, hoppy taste with chocolate, coffee, dried fruit, spicy hints of rye, soy sauce and a generous piney, citric bitterness in a long, salty finish. More than medium body, with some sweetness. Not really balanced, but in my opinion very nice.

Det här var en behaglig ölupplevelse och den inledde med en trevligt humlig arom. Smaken präglades dock av en kraftig maltighet med mycket kaffe, choklad och ett litet inslag av lakrits. Slutsats: gott.

Purchased at systembolaget in Uppsala sometime in the middle of April, 2011. Overall, this was a very good, if not slightly unique beer with a strange sort of balance. Pours with a dark brown color, culminating in a small, but resilient tan head with respectable lacing. The nose is hoppy and malty: somewhat florally with hints of caramel and coffee – stout meets IPA perhaps. While the mouth feel is a bit less creamy than I might have hoped, the taste relatively complex in a strange sort of way: fairly malty/roasted taste in the start, maybe some berries mixed in. A salty coffee flavor comes into focus about halfway through and finishes with the expected hoppy bitterness. Overall, thus is a very respectable beer, one that I’d buy again just to see if I could grow into its strange balance.
