durhambeer (323), Durham, North Carolina, USA May 3, 2008 Deep golden, fairly hazy pour with medium to small white head. Lots of yeast on the nose, with a somewhat doughy presence as well as some lemony citrus. Some slight spice. Thought it landed somewhere in between a Belgian golden and a saison. Tasty, but not mind-blowing.
haukur (655), Reykjavik, Iceland Jul 22, 2008 tap at gingermans nyc. no notes yet again. Very drinkable, grassy and floral. Pleasantly earthy and herbal, nice tingling carbonation. Very good example of the style BoBoChamp (281), Gent, Belgium Jul 21, 2008 75cl, from De Hopduvel Gent, complex, yet easy to drink, cloudy, good head, good brew nearbeer (1101), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jul 21, 2008 33 cl. Foret version. Foggy orange-brown with a large head that settles to a lasting inch of meringue. Aroma is musty, tart apple baked with a dab of brown sugar-caramel and a twist of lemon juice. Flavor is similar, but the finish dries well so that it’s seemingly not as sweet as the aroma would indicate. Starts with tart apple cider and a hint of caramel turning to earthy spice, tea leaf, and a finish of bitterish woody herb. Near-medium body is acidic-tingly and watery. emacgee (976), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jul 21, 2008 Pours a hazy pale gold with a one finger creamy white head. The nose is spicy, earhty, tart, lemongrass, citrusy. The flaovr is spicy, earthy, waxy, bitter hop presence. Very nice refreshing saison. Has a waxy hop bite that I was not expecting. JoeMcPhee (3643), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Jul 16, 2008 750 ml 2007 bottle. Pale amber, tan-gold beer with a thick creamy tan head. Aroma is awesome, bright citrusy lemony character over a soft leathery spiciness. Zesty and lightly earthy. Lots of bright corky goodness. Rich and cologney with lots of pear/apple esters. Very spicy and peppery with a lot of flinty dryness. Quite astringent, but despite that, I quite like it. A bit of swirling softens the carbonation and makes it a much more enjoyable brew. Quite a bit maltier and richer than I typically imagine a saison to be, but it’s pretty solid nonetheless.
