Cobra (1076) - In a van, down by the river, Maryland, USA - SEP 2, 2004
A solid "4" beer if ever there was one. 750 ml. green champagne bottle. Corked and caged. Cryptic date code of L03123B/4 on front label. 2003 date on cork. Loud pop forcefully ejected the cork. Good thing I was ready for it. Poured out a hazy piss yellow color. Thick white meringue-like head was enormous, and stuck around forever. It still had a decent head when I hit the bottom of my Chimay chalice. I think this beer has been mis-classified, because it’s way more of a Saison than a Strong Pale Ale. Aromas right off the bat were of funky Belgian farmhouses and barns, along with an herbal twang to it. Slight phenols and sweet malts mix for an interesting effect on your nostrils. Classic funky Belgian yeast, and corriander makes your mouth water before you even taste it for the first time. Artisanal beer at it’s best here gang. If you don’t appreciate this beer for what it is, you don’t appreciate beer, period. The level of CO² was high, very effervescent and prickly on the tongue. Wet, medium mouthfeel, meaning it isn’t dry and astringent. It has a slight sour puckering effect on the mouth, but it’s appropriate for the style. Tastes are about the same as the aromas, funky Belgian yeasts, peppery spices, no hops, and sweet malts. Tastes to me like a monsterous Saison. Alcohol is well hidden, but it has a warming effect in the gut, and it will definitely sneak up on you, and whack you upside the head. Dangerously drinkable, smooth and delicious. One to keep your eye out for when you’re out buying beer. A top notch Belgian by anyone’s standards.

33cl bottle BD L01028/1 Deep gold, awesome white head, rushing bubbles. Smells of banana, citrus, malt, horsehay. Flavor is spicy, peppery bitterness. Finished dry w/ slight alcohol, spice, orange rind. A real nice Triple with just a hint of farmhouse character. 3+ years of bottle aging have not harmed it. A joy. I’d only wish there was a bit more malt flavor there.

33 cL bottle, snifter. Caramel, cookie, bread, cereal malt (M); lemon, flowers, grass hops (M); dough, leather yeast (L); clove, peach, pineapple, cherry, anise, pepper aromas. Beautiful, billowing, creamy, tight, white head that is well lasting, clings to the glass and sits on a deep golden body. Heavily sweet, lightly acidic flavor becomes a moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter finish. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. The bottom line is: a classy and nuanced beer that could have easily fooled me into believing it was a Saison.

Bottle - 750ml. Nice hazy golden body topped with a thick white foamy head. Well balanced malty/hoppy aroma with yeasty, citrusy and coriander notes. Alcohol is very well hidden. Taste is sharp and well balanced. Along with the hoppy flavors, it carries various herbal, flowery and fruity hints. It leaves a long and strong bittersweet aftertaste. This is a lovely one.
