I loved this stuff - full of yeast, beautiful color in the glass, and one of the best heads I’ve ever seen, with a wonderful lace accompanying it. Very hoppy for a belgian, subdued by an underlying malt and yeast flavor. A definite repeat! JPDIPSO (4944), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 6, 2003 Label as joet states. Checked Duponts site and it look like this one should be here. Light cloudy golden color. A voluminous head of off white bubbles that resides for a considerable time turning somewhat rocky. One large ring of lace left after imbibing the rest. Light aromas of pears, cobweb yeast, cloves, pineapples, and cookie dough. Light and spritzy as it dances across the tongue. Thins out as it warms. Start with a dry attic yeast flavor followed by light malt and pepper. The finish goes to light fruit and spice(clove and pepper). Maybe a touch sweet but the depth makes up for it. I thought I caught the alcohol with my first quaff, but have not noticed it since, except for the fact that my eyelids are falling down. Nice belgian strong/golden.
I continue to ponder the life of a beer as it hits the glass:
Some are meant to sit and breath and gain life by the oxygen, and warmth of the hand and surroundings. They love being held and embraced, a long and lasting potation.
Other are meant to be gulped, quaffed, swizzled, toped, guzzled, swigged and swilled. they are there for the taking, take them and abuse them, they enjoy it, and will not care if you visit again.
Then there are those that have a short life, for once the carbon dioxide dies they are nothing but pale malt drool liquid. A quick passion, strike while the fire burns, lest it turn to ashes and be wasted.
Damn thee beer to hell! For thou soundest like a woman!! ClarkVV (3578), Allston, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 10, 2006 Updated: Sep 18, 2006750mL 2005 bottle drunk on 9/1/06. Yep, it’s a dupont (massive, dense, rocky white head is incredibly well-retained and laces the entire glass. Bottle is unfiltered, unpasteurized). Leaving the sediment behind produces a minimally hazy, pale-gold with some very light copper tresses. Tiny bubbles are apparent throughout the liquid. Zestily dry, saaz and/or Golding-like hops are lightly spicy, heavily grassy and match the dry, crisp yeast in stride, playing balance to the clean, straw-meets-honey bouquet of malts that are fluffy, somewhat doughy and fully round and comforting. Fruit esters: nectarine, apriot, and lemon, meld perfectly with the hops, creating an almost tart note that is quite strong and very invigorating. Light minerals, clean water and honey-vanilla notes emerge with warming, in addition to an almost lavendar-like note. No alcohol whatsoever in the nose. Light dough and soft honey are roused, slightly, by a bit of baked baguette crust breadiness. Hop bitterness is moderate, drying out the malt, while delivering crisp, refreshing spiciness. Light lemon-lime, fresh grass, hickory nut skin (and a touch of dustiness peaking through from the yeast) all combine on the end to keep things wonderfully dry. Even with warming, the lush malts never dominate the balance, though from start to finish, they provide excellently soft support on the palate. Frothy, engaging, tight carbonation (which needs time to breath) distributes the dryness and keeps the beer incredibly drinkable for its size. Light fruit esters (nectarine and pear skin) and delicious Dupont yeast are licked from the lips in the aftertaste, while zesty hop burps are further delightful. Near perfect attenuation, could possibly be even a bit drier, with slightly less breadiness, but this is sublime stuff. Perkeo (318), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 27, 2006 Nice pale but hazy gold with attractive bone white foam on top. Intese estery aroma, redolent with evergreen, citrus peel and juniper. Very alive on the palate, carbonation carries a nice peppery flavor that’s quite dry and thin bodied in a very refreshing way, very champagne like, but with the overall impression of champagne made in an East Kent (or Poperinge) hopyard...classic! Smooth flavor, characteristic belgian yeast flavor, pilsner malt taste, sweetness. Not much bitterness. Very good. GG (1689), NorCal, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 17, 2006 Easily one of the best beers I’ve had in awhile. This one has the whole package and it doesn’t skimp on anything. Aroma is peaches, apples, pears and other sweet fruit. Appearance was excellent with an explosive white head and excellent lacing to go with the hazy orangish/yellow hue. Mouthfeel was bright and alive, and the beer seemed to be dancing on your toungue like a live wire. Flavors were more of the same with the nose, with an excellent dry finish that paired excellently with my dinner. I can only imagine how good this beer would be in Beligum, but I’m happy enough to consume it when I can. cykyc (28), USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 28, 2008 An aromatic hoppy with the lightest caramel hints. I think of every good Belgian I’ve had when I smell this one! Good head pour, recedes not too quickly. Not clear, with corresponds to the unfiltered text on the label. The flavor resonates in my mouth for a good moment. It has, what I describe as a high lift in my mouth. I expect the taste to drop, but it kind of floats away. Meaning, there’s no real different aftertaste. But, the initial taste does stay around. Really unexpected. It has a slight nose-clearing sensation (similar to strong alcohols) and almost a peppery after-effect. The body is smooth on the tongue. The cork has "2.006", which I assume is the European way to state the year 2006 (period versus a comma).
