Hand pulled at The Old Contemptibles, Birmingham. Chestnut ale, lacking any detectable aroma; which is surprising for a ípremiumí bitter. Tastes weaker than it is - watery but with just enough bitterness in the finish to keep it interesting. Actually the finish is quite long - more noticeable as I work my way down. Some Marmite in there, some red wine, yes hops. Itís a grower but itís in that awkward middle ground - too strong for a session ale, yet too watery to be worth selecting this ahead of a session ale.

August 31, 2013 - hand-pull cask at The Southwark Tavern. Clear refractive amber with a decent beige head. Smells - incredibly bitter, light grain, grassy, grassy, grassy, maybe a hint of apple and caramel - not much alcohol - really good stuff. Taste - not strong alcohol, mostly just grassy bitterness. I thought it was going to be a hop-monster, and it is bitter, but mostly just simple and balanced. Average everything, including finish - solid.
