What do Scotland and the American South have in common? An appreciation for good booze. But that doesn’t mean they always get along. We put our award-winning Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale in Kentucky bourbon barrels and let them duke it out in the cellar. Who won? You did. The chocolate, caramel and roasted malts in Drafty Kilt complement the charred oak and vanilla notes in the bourbon barrels quite well. Notice we didn’t say "compliment." Scotch and Bourbon still don’t send each other Christmas cards.

Smells like bourbon. Oaky. Vanilla. Caramel. Looks well ok. This was on tap at the brewery. So it looks good. Nice head. Dark brown but you can tell it’s brown. Tastes like bourbon. Same as smell. Palate is smooth. Goes down smooth. Medium body clean finish. Ok.... This this rates amazing so far but I have to knock it points because it doesn’t represent the style very well. Otherwise a great beer.

bomber, this one was ok, very sweet though and the barrel made it a lot sweeter which pretty much killed it for me, pretty flat and lame.

22 ounce bottle. Light bourbon. Dark body with some chocolate. Carbonation pushes it into cocoa cola range for taste.

Aroma- Bourbon, dark fruit, caramel, nice oak character, and some chocolate. Second pour brought out some light tropical fruit and pine. Taste- Plum, caramel, and other dark fruits up front, followed by a wave of tropical fruit over a nice roasty backbone. Smokiness comes in toward the end with some light notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and pine. Ever so slight bourbon on the finish with a nice little burn. Sometimes dark cherry shows up as well. Dark chocolate, roast, and some pine comes out in the aftertaste.

Dark brown, almost black with a dark tan head. Aroma is slight chocolate and vanilla bean. A bit of bourbon, but not strong. Flavor is light peat and smoke with a nice but of sweet malt. Bourbon is understated, comes in a bit at the end. It does finish a little thin, but other than that fairly tasty. Wife: 3.8

On tap at the 2014 Secret Stash Bash (Atlanta). Large and durable head over an opaque and, I think, murky black body. Aroma: uninviting, dank mess smells more like old red wine barrels were used rather than bourbon barrels. Improved a little with warming. Flavor: hard to get past the aroma but here goes... Not bad. Not great but not bad. Still, not as expected and a bit too sweet. This is from a keg I saw getting delivered directly from the brewery earlier today, so there’ s no way this should be bad beer. Cannot account for the bad aroma except to suspect the barrel. Feel: medium body and carbonation.

Bomber from Maltitude in Columbus, GA. Pours a semi translucent black / very dark brown. Decent head with medium retention. Aroma is strong bourbon notes with some subtle caramel and sugar hints. Taste is bourbon, oak notes, alcohol. Transitions to a sweet, roasted caramel malt flavor. Palate is thin with medium-high carbonation. Overall a very enjoyable beer, with complex and well defined flavor profile.

Bomber on valentines day. Definitely let this warm up a touch. Boxy bourbon and vanilla aromas. Sweet and bourbony flavor again. Chewy grain malt flavors. Vanilla. Touch of red fruit.

Bottle shared at the Foothills Sexual Chocolate pre-release party. Pours a nice looking dark chocolate. Nice peatiness with a light caramel malt body. Classic representation of the scotch ale.

Pours a clear copper brown from the bottle with dissipating tan brown head that leaves little to no lace. Aroma is bourbon and wood and tannins and smoky malt. Taste is definitely bourbon heavy with a hint of smokiness thrown in. Sweet but not overbearing, light carbonation. Pretty solid offering.
