COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A roasty scotch ale with a hint of smoke. Full-bodied, but not overpowering. Smokey, but not in a creepy bar kind of way. Sweet, but not obnoxiously so. Sound like your ideal mother-in-law? Fair enough, but it also is a pretty dead-on description of our Scotch Ale. In a difficult hop-growing climate, Scottish brewers relied on other ingredients to impart flavor and bitterness – one such ingredient was smoked malt. Drafty Kilt is a dark, malty bombshell of a beer.

Brewed at Thomas Creek before the brewery opened.

Draft at the tasting room in Atlanta. 6oz pour. Awesome deep brown pour with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of malts, licorice, scotch, oak, smoke, and sweet cane. The taste was well balanced malts, booze, oak, mild hops, herbs, licorice and sugar. Medium to full body, heavy scotch finish. Very good scotch ale. Cant wait to have another.

Bottle pours dark brown with a finger of foamy head. No sign of smoke, leaving the sweetness too cloying.

Transfer from BA review on 3-29-14- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown color with a small tan colored head. The head fades very fast leaving only a trace of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt smell but has a huge dose of a caramel and molasses as well. Some other aromas of a cherry and prune nature are there as well mixing with the other sweet smells and producing a potently sweet smell overall. Taste – The taste begins with a bit of a roasted malt flavor and a whole lot of sweet caramel and some dark fruit flavors of cherry and plum. As the taste advances the caramel transitions to a more molasses like taste with a bit of chocolate and even more cherry and plum coming to the tongue. Some flavors of a cola sweetness then come to the tongue more toward the end. This makes the brew rather sweet overall, but with a little bit of a more herbal and earthy hop flavor coming to the tongue, while not balanced out the sweetness is subdued a bit, leaving a sweet and lightly hopped flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the average side. Overall the feel wasn’t all that great in my opinion. The thicker body accentuates the sweet flavors a bit too much with a lower carbonation likely having been better for the mix of lighter dark and hop flavors, possibly giving them more influence overall. Overall – I know a scotch ale should be sweet, but this was just rather unbalanced and not all the great of a scotch ale. The flavors don’t really meld well on this one and with the rather poor mouthfeel and look, it really doesn’t have much draw.

Very dark pour with a decent creamy tan head. Nose of sweet raisins and a hint of smoke. Tastes of roasted malts. Smoke only seems to come through in the finish and lingers on the palate. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
