"Premium Beer"
The Indian Mongoose has all the courage and cunning to devour even its most deadly enemies. Those in the know choose Mongoose, premium beer at its best. A 5.0% abv lager brewed with Hallertau and Hersbrucker hops. Its exceptional smoothness and soft carbonation make it the perfect match for Indian food.
Launched in June 2010 in collaboration with Indian restaurant supplier Gandhi Wine Suppliers Ltd. Wells had lost the contract to brew Cobra lager in 2009. Wells & Young own the recipe to Cobra, and haven’t changed it for Mongoose.

Bottled, 670ml from Tesco in Banbury. Pale gold with fizzed head. This was really sweet, syrupy from the start, corn like with a hint of vanilla and toffee. Not any better than its predecessor unfortunately. Poor.

670ml bottle from Sainsbury’s. A standard pale lager. Dry and drinkable - no problems. Few hops, but some people like it that way. The bottle image is of a mongoose with a dead cobra in its mouth. This beer was launched by Wells & Young after they lost the contract to brew Cobra.

Bought from Tesco to go with a curry, looks good with a golden colour with a good white head. Quite malty body, smooth and lightly hopped. It went well with the curry, would buy again!

This 670ml brown bottle was the first beer in one of my ’random beer tasting evenings’ (9th Sep 2011). Brewed using an old Indian recipe according to the labels on the bottle. Poured into a La Chouffe glass and two stemmed lager tulips: good golden lager looks, the usual snowy white cap that doesn’t last topped the beer off. The smells coming from the brew were of straw, with a few hops thrown in. The taste had a hop front, a really dry mouthfeel and less carbonisation than most lager/pilsners and I reckon it would accompany a curry very well. Not bad at all, but yet another addition to the already over-flowing UK Lager scene, they can’t all survive! New bit: I visited an Indian Curry House in Cambridge (Dec 2011) and found this on-tap: really enjoyed it, felt just right with the hot food quenching my thirst and keeping me cool, had to have two pints though!

Smooth tasting very similar to Cobra and in a similar shaped bottle, are they the same? Other than that its drinkable and inoffensive but ultimately forgetable

Bottle. Aroma of hops with some floral and citrus notes, pale golden appearance, medium carbonation. Taste is a quite fruity with some bitterness, ideal with spicy foods.

Difficult to really consider this as any more than slightly better than its curry fodder rivals. Some decent hop bitterness but unfortunately its a touch skunky and not a great balance to it.

Bottle (670ml):
Sweet smelling pale lager that consists of mainly straw and other adjuncts like vegtables. Not much going on this department really, there is a light hop light aroma.
Clear &pale orange to straw colour. Small head that lasts throughout as a thick lacing.
Corn and various adjuncts making up the bulk of the taste, of which there isn’t to much.Like the nose it is a mildy sweet beer. The finish is however a little bit skunky, although not overly.
A very smooth, light bodied beer that goes easy on the carbonation and has a slightly dry finish to it.

Not a bad tasting lager really, but mainly because the flavour was so weak with this one. It was an okay drink really but not one that I’ll be buying again.

Pours clear pale golden colour with small head. Aroma of grass, clove, some butter and little citrus. Flavour is the same. Straightforward and boring. Medium carbonation, somewhat bitter palate.
