COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Formerly brewed for Inlet Brewing Co. (ex Jupiter Brewing Co.) by Orlando Brewing Co., now by Thomas Creek.

This unique copper-colored ale derives its fruity, slightly spicy aroma from authentic Belgian Abbey yeast. The subtle nutty and malty sweet flavors sing in harmony with the freshest organic hops vailable. Monk In the Trunk devotees are known to chant about its most intriguing quality, true drinkability.

What a great beer! This copper tinted brew blends earthy aromatics with a perfect hoppy, caramel taste. Yum!

Had this at a dinner where everyone else was getting fancy cocktails or wine. Poured a clear dark amber color with a off-white head. Aroma was light sweetness, touch of booze notes. Caramel notes. Light nutty notes. Sweet malts dominate this one, caramel. Light earthy hops.

Amber/copper pour, small head. Nose is sweet citrus. Slight yeast, orange sweetish. Little hop character. Drinkable but nothing special.

They say if you throw hops in anything American craft beer drinkers will gobble it up. But I find the same is true of anything branded as Belgian, don’t you? The mark of Belgian (especially Abbey) seems to give a beer some prestige. However, that doesn’t seem to work at all in the favor of Monk in the Trunk Organic Amber Ale by Inlet Brewing Company. It only has the faintest Abbey character; otherwise, it’s pretty mild and forgettable.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a red wine glass. It appears to have been bottled on 10/12/15 and cost $2.19 ($0.18 per ounce).

Appearance: More copper than amber per se, though a pretty shade that’s mostly clear. Carbonation is noticeable at first, but it dies down eventually. Pours to a small, off-white, foamy head which mostly dissipates and leaves little lacing.

Smell: Lightly sweet with amber malt character and a general Belgian estery quality. Seems to be a bit oxidized, too.

Taste: When I think amber ale – be it American or Belgian – I think pretty big flavors, especially on the malt spectrum. This beer certainly is more malty than hoppy, but that’s not saying much since the palette as a whole is rather boring and restrained. There are flavors akin to herbal tea, which seems to be due to slight oxidation (sherry, lemon lollipop flavor) and a complete lack of hops. I really get no bitterness here at. I don’t get much in the way of Belgian yeast spiciness as promised on the label. That’s not to say it tastes disgusting, though. I would consider this a more neutral-tasting beer than a bad one. There’s minor sweetness – which is nice – but not enough to really carry the bulk of the palette.

Drinkability: At only 5.5% ABV, Monk in the Trunk is actually quite light for a supposedly Belgian-style brew. The mouthfeel is thin, light and the carbonation dies down quickly. It is at least smooth and there’s slightly sweet aftertaste which isn’t bad. Still, this is too light-bodied for its own good. Perhaps if it was bottle-conditioned it would seem more authentic.

RATING: 5/10

Poured with great head...smell is mild but of good malt...taste is medium mild and very smooth and tasty malt....unique with very low hops...maltiness is palpable... Light sweetness and a bit milky...wish there was a bit more depth though

Amber pour w/thinnish head. Very malty with fruity hops. Banana & clove Belgian influence. Ok. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Fairly boring beer. Pours golden. Definitely a sweetness to this.. But it reminds me more of a cheap lager than anything else. Sweetness... Malts.. Almost a sour aftertaste... Like drinking too many Budweiser’s.

Bottle, thanks to Cards04. Slightly cloudy golden amber pour without much head. Aroma is light malty caramel, sweet, with some fruity Belgian yeast. Taste is light and sweet, flavours kind of like a Vienna lager with Belgian yeast added. Also low carbonation and fruity lingering flavours. Interesting idea, but comes off a little too sweet without much to balance.

Thanks cards04 for this bottle. I’m not sure what this has to do with the sort of beer monks brew, certainly not Belgian monks. It might use the yeast, but it doesn’t deliver the complexity or depth of flavour. Light coloured body. Nutty sweet malt aroma. Taste is also sweet grainy malts with a touch of dry tartness. Overall, pretty much just an average amber ale.

On tap at The Brass Tap poured a hazy orange amber with a small lingering ivory head. Aromas of straw, yeast, pepper and grapefruit. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a smooth dry finish. Flavors of straw, pepper, grapefruit and yeast with a smooth dry bitter lingering peppery grapefruit finish.
