Piney, bright, citrusy, and crisp. These are the first things that come to mind when drinking the Mandrill IPA. Looking at the Mandrill will show you a bright gold beer with a lacy white head. The aroma and taste are both swimming with fruit and grass, and a bit of a floral finish. Complex and evenly bitter, the Mandrill IPA is a classic San Diego IPA.

On tap @ Stone Liberty Station. Clear orange/amber pour with a white head. Super floral and fragrant. A lot of peach and orange preserves. Flavor has a slight soapiness to it and a lot of flowers, spice, and orange. A hint of cranberry, too. Bitter grapefruit and orange rinds. Sort of sweet and malty, but not bad.

Medium sweet flavor with more spicy hops, dry pale malts, slight minerals, lemon peel. Medium bodied with average to lively carbonation. Dry to finish with spicy pine, pine needles, minerals, grapefruit pith, lemon rind. Fair.

On tap @ Monkey Paw: Poured a clear golden liquid with a frothy layer of head that eventually broke down leaving the beer naked. The aroma is impossible to smell due to the noisy, smelly, and cramped atmosphere. The drink makes up for that emptiness in the nose by delivering a semi-bitter taste of hops that reminds me of an extra pale ale more than it does an IPA. Overall pretty standard for the style while being easily quaffable.

Draft into a pint glass at Monkey Paw Pub and Brewery on Aug. 26, 2012 ( for $4.50) in San Diego, Calif. Poured a hazy orange with thick, white head. Good wet, foamy retention all around Smelled citrus hops, mainly lemon and grapefruit. Also some sweet floral notes. Good whiff overall. Taste reminded me of Manzanita’s IPA. Very bitter. Light citrus hops, grapefruit, lemon zest and orange peel. Light-to-medium body. Thinner, but somewhat creamy finish. Above average-to-average carbonation. Long, bitter finish. A decent IPA, but not great. I’d probably try it again, though.

Sampled on tap at the Brewpub; July 2012
The beer arrives with a long lasting, pale tan colored head. The beer is a clear, red tinged, amber-gold color. The citrus hop punch in the nose has an ample lychee character to it as well. Hints of supporting herbal and pine notes are noticeable secondarily. This is about the hop fruit though in the nose; other notes of kumquat, tangelo zest, and ruby-red-grapefruit juice are easily noticeable. If you dig here there are notes of cracker and a touch of biscuit like malt character.

The beer is lightly sweet tasting, with lots of fruity hop character. It is quite smooth, with a mellow bitterness; though it does still have a bite to it. Thi also has a buttery, seemingly, diacetyl like, note to it in my first sip; this is somewhat soft and seems to work here for now. Amply noticeable are aromas of ruby red grapefruit, lychee, dank herbal notes, a touch of pine that grows in the finish. The buttery note is subtle enough that it might just be dank hop character. I like that the hop fruit is dominant here, but it is well supported by dank, herbal, and pine notes. The body is nice, it has some chew and heft to it, but it is still quite quaffable. I could wish for a little more lightness in the body, but that would detract from the fruit and subtle balancing malt flavors; these last provide notes of biscuit malt, and whole grain cracker character.

This is a great IPA. In the end, I don’t think that the buttery note was actually from diacetyl, it is just a dank hop character that adds to the dimensional complexity. I would love to drink a whole lot of this beer.

Draught at the brewery. Nice citrus nose, a bit of tropical mango and passion fruit and some bready malts. Big bitter flavor with tons of citrus coming through. A solid West Coast style IPA, light and clean.

From tap at the brewpub. Pours hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma is smooth fruity and crisp hoppy. Bitter, fruity and mellow into a smooth finish. Lasting fruity into the far finish.
