The Oatmeal Pale Ale is sort of an unusual style, and something not often seen in San Diego. Most of our city’s beers are dry, crisp, and bitter. This is a mellower pale ale, with a full, supportive body that gives a strong malt presence with a lot of floral and tangerine rind hop flavors to balance it out. Smelling this beer is a treat, with a big oatmeal and citrus aroma. Creamy and smooth, lightly bitter, a beautiful gold with a bright white head and beautiful lacing. Excellent for those who enjoy a more evenly balanced pale.

Pouts a very dark, hazy golden orange color with deep apricot edges and a one finger frothy white head that slowly settles into a thin lasting ring. Excellent retention with streaks of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down. Somewhat bland aroma with very faint smoke, floral hops and fresh cut grass countered by pale malt and light fruit sweetness. Biscuit, bread and cracker along with subtle cider-like sweetness. Fuller body than expected with a spicy hop bite that lingers over the sweeter notes and pale malt backbone into a slightly dry finish. Slight dry bitterness with grass, pine needle and subtle resins countered by faint citrus sweetness. A touch of tart grapefruit followed by bread, biscuit and light fruit esters. Some cider, pear and banana with subtle boozy sweetness in the finish. Light and easy to drink but not very interesting.

I enjoyed this subtle and simple pale ale over a lunch of salad greens and chili, and while the flavors might be understated, they paired remarkably well with the blend of greens, artichoke hearts and the occasional olive punctuating each few bites. It’s an unassuming pale brew with a clean, crisp aroma adding malt, light touches of citrus and a good yeastiness, and the flavor introduces much the same. A crisp, clean palate and shorter aftertaste gave this brew a short lifespan, and while by itself it might be a little boring, I was quite pleased to have this to the side of my main dish.

Keg at Monkey Paw, SD, 21/04/14. Hazed orange amber with a moderate off white covering. Nose is toasted malt, bitter orange, straw, light citric peel, caramel, bread dough. Taste comprises orange pith, straw, light hops, touch of grapefruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. So so APA lacks hop presence.

16oz can pours clear copper with near white head of foam. The aroma is sort of floral and a bit spicy with a hint of malts to maybe biscuit malts. The taste follows suit with fairly bold floral hop notes that have some firm bitterness but remain too floral for my particular taste. Behind the floral notes murmurs some spicy hops that grow to a decent level bitterness to midway and into the finish accompanied by a bit of biscuit like maltiness. Yep, too floral for me but good beer though.

Can at Brewster’s LAX. Deep copper-amber color with a fine, low head. Malty caramel nose, citrus, peach or apricot, nice fruit. Rich full malt flavor, creamy and tasty but not sweet. Tangerine and apricot, grass. Very bitter finish. Very full and drinkable, also original. Nice stuff.
