3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured a nice brown hue. Smelled nutty and had hints of smoke. It had a good amount of carbonation that had a cleansing effect on the palate. Tasted nutty; I don’t generally like the style, but it was surprisingly drinkable.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Can from Bine & Vine. Pours dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is primarily darkish milk chocolate. Med+ body. Creamy. Flavor is bitter chocolate, some sludgy burnt malt, and hints of treacle and coffee. Definitely on the dry side of life. Has none of that odd roast malt aspect often found in browns. This beer is something of it’s own. Nice stuff.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampler at the brewpub. Being a fan of browns, I was excited to see this on the list and the bartender said it was her favorite. Dark brown in color with a small light tan head. Nose was roasty, with a hint of chocolate. Sweet to the taste, medium bodied with a nice finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled on tap at the Brewpub; July 2012
The beer arrives with a lasting, lightly brown tinged head that sits on top of a dark brown colored beer that has amber highlights to it. The aroma has a toasted, almost roasted maltiness to it that is quite dry, but also quite nutty in character. This has a wholesome brown, whole-grain character to it in the nose, as well as touches of pale-roasted coffee. A supporting fruit character (mostly like raisin) and light herbal hop aroma up front help to add some complexity to this brew.
There is lots of caramelized malt character in the flavor; it turns nutty after being sweet, there is a solid brown bread malt character, as well as a raisin like fruitiness. The fruit character is accentuated by the malt here, and this actually has a solid, supporting fruit character that works very well with the dominant malt character. This is nice and chewy, but is still oh-so quaffable. The nutty note in the finish leans towards roasted coffee like notes, and these even provide a touch of bitterness to this beer (that is likely also accentuated by the hop character). Speaking of which, there is also even a touch of herbal and currant like character here; though the latter is perhaps more from the malt.
This is more than a solid Brown Ale; I always have a soft spot for a well-made one, and this is certainly that. This has a great nutty balance to it, and I like that the crystal malt character is here, but it supports the other notes rather than makes this cloying. It is hard not to be in love with this beer; and it pairs awesomely with the spicy, Naughty Monkey Cheese Steak that I am currently eating.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draught at the brewpub. Candy and burnt caramel nose. Almost black. Flavors of roasted caramel, bitter hops. Clean and tasty, rich and quite stout-like, yet the caramel comes through nicely. Dry finish.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Not the worst brown ale, not the best. IT pours a robust dark brown. The flavor is a bit blunt but full-on.
