Moving to the house beers I began my flight with a very nice brown ale. Once again it has a very West Coast feel to it that is missing from its European counterparts. That established it is a great session beer that would be easy to pair with almost anything.
Aroma / Appearance - The chestnut base is a bit murky and dim with a redwood edge. Vanilla head traps the dusty leather, wood shavings, malts, and gentle hop presence that hangs in the air.
Flavor / Palate - Caramel and malt balls stick to the tongue. Walnut and cedar transition to a robust finish. Nothing is so overpowering that it ever detracts from the basics of a sessionable beer that is meant to go with almost anything. If all Monkey Paw beers are this good San Diego really is lousy with world class breweries.

Aluminum can from South Bay Liquor: Poured a dark brown liquid all the way to the rim of my pint glass with a minimal formation of film head which eventually fizzes out. Aroma is rich and robust with a deep base of toasted malts that bring out a ground roast coffee scent while still giving off the smell of a bag of assorted nuts.. That’s probably the best smelling simple brown ale I have ever come across in production bottle or can—seriously. The drink is amazingly well balanced holding a big malt bill that boasts of toffee and caramel but with a nice toasty touch on those malts while a flavor of nuts earns my attention considering this was supposed to be a regular old brown ale style.

[10/7/13] Draught at Delirium Hoppy Loft in Brussels. Very dark brown to black with a tan head. Nice roasty coffee aroma. Roasty and coffee-ish flavor, bittersweet, with a drier finish. Medium-bodied. Very nice.

Draft @ Hoppy Loft. Here is another Delirium bar gem that they can’t manage to tap fresh, and instead wait more than 6 months to serve.
Brune, col épais café au lait.
Arôme est malté grillé, léger poussiéreux, grains le tout sur une pointe de citronné - houblonné. Malheureusement, le bouquet conserve une note lactique qui joue en défaveur de la bière.
Palais est malté moyen, semble bien passé son temps. Pétillant moyen avec ce côté vieille bière. Légère amertume, pointe de grillé et torréfié. Amertume est modéré, assez sec en fin de bouche.

Very nice brown ale, on tap at the brewery in san diego, nutty, sweet, easy to drink.

Tap at Monkey Paw. Clear, deep red pour. Cocoa dusty, richer malt nose. Decent dusty body, lots of cocoa powder. One note.

Poured a nice brown hue. Smelled nutty and had hints of smoke. It had a good amount of carbonation that had a cleansing effect on the palate. Tasted nutty; I don’t generally like the style, but it was surprisingly drinkable.

Can. Dark brown beer with a dark tan head. Malt and light toffee/caramel aroma. Caramel and nutty flavor with light chocolate. Medium bodied. Caramela nd nuttiness lingers with chocolate and light coffee.

Can from Bine & Vine. Pours dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is primarily darkish milk chocolate. Med+ body. Creamy. Flavor is bitter chocolate, some sludgy burnt malt, and hints of treacle and coffee. Definitely on the dry side of life. Has none of that odd roast malt aspect often found in browns. This beer is something of it’s own. Nice stuff.

On tap 5 oz. sample at Encinitas Ale House in Encinitas, CA. Clear, nearly opaque, very, very deep mahogany with off-white head and excellent lacing.
