250ml bottle from agnst for Secret Santa 2012. Black with a faint ruby hue and minimal brown head that leaves a ring around the glass. Roasted malts, anise, fresh raisins, slightly burnt nose. Moderate to full body, moderate but smooth carbonation, bit of an alcohol body, more burnt and slightly sweet but more bitter alcohol with more alcohol on the finish.

In short: A harsh boozy roasted big black beer. Disappointing.
How: Bottle 250ml, purchased in Sweden from a Systembolaget location and consumed fresh the day after. My bottle at 13.5%, much higher than the vintages currently listed here.
The look: Black body topped by a small dark beige head with low retention
In long: Nose is a burnt fruit cake, some chocolate and some annoying fusel notes. Taste has a lot of very grainy burnt cereals, burnt raisin bread, resinous sensation of some kind (but not hops resin), raisins, cheap instant coffee. Booze heat is showing with a rubbing alcohol sensation. Smooth carbonation. Overall if felt rather rough, not a rich big beer, just a lot of burnt stuff and booze. Previous vintages listed on ratebeer show lower abv, I wish it was one of those I drank. Maybe time will do nice things to this recent 13.5% vintage I had, but I had it fresh and it was a bit brutal. Basic passing grade here. It wasn’t a very good beer but it tried its best, now it’s gone, farewell bottle of Monks Café Russian Imperial Porter (RIP), may you Rest In Piss (RIP).

Pure fucking motor oil. The blackest porter I’ve ever seen. Bubbly but thin dark brown head. Nose is roasted malts, burnt coffee, dark and bittersweet chocolate. Flavor is similar but with a bit of heat (13.5% abv) adding a nice touch of booze. Full bodied, perhaps a bit thin (lack of carbonation + heat), nice oily finish. A big porter that maintains some of the porter notes but certainly brings it well within the imperial stout vibe. Thanks _angst_!

Black colour with a nice beige head. Coffee and chocolate aroma. Nice well blended flavour. Starts with licorice. Then coffee and some sweet chocolate. Full body.

HaddockS (2) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - SEP 7, 2012 does not count
---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Opaque dark brown/black liquid with minimal tan head that dissipates very fast. Monk’s have to work on their heads... Aroma of dark fruit, dark chocolate, licorice, dark roasted coffee, biscuit, caramel and raw sugar. Nice! Taste is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of dark fruit, raw sugar and licorice. Weird sourness. Extremely full bodied with soft carbonation. Very velvety and oily. Nice but weirdly sour and a bit too oily.

(Bottle). Strong and slightly sour aroma and taste of roasted malt, sweet coffee, chocolate, alcohol, oak and licorice. The aftertaste has a dry bitterness and hints of warming alcohol. A beer with a complex flavor.

Benzai (8395) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - AUG 21, 2012
25cl bottle @ Monks Cafe Wallingatan, Stockholm. (Bottle said 13,5% ABV, aged on MacMyra Whiskey Barrels IBU 70). Pitch black, opaque color, very small light brown head. Smell dark and roasted malts, lightly alcohol, clearly barrel-aged: lots of wood and liquor. Taste dark malts, roasted malts, some coffee, medium bitter, slightly hops, wood and liquor. Very complex, very lovely! Oily texture, medium to full body, low but suitable carbo.
