A ruckus of complex flavor is carried in on the amber glow of torchlight. As tension builds between hop bitterness and the malty tones delivered by locally grown and malted grist, a perfect balance is achieved. The robust texture of rye allies itself with the flavors from specialty malts and hops to rebel against preconceived notions of beer. Unseat the crown. Start a Riot.

Appearance: clear bright copper, with a fat finger of creamy, frothy, off-white head that has excellent staying power and leaves plenty of lace. Aroma: awesome smells of rustic grains, crusty rye bread, light sage, grapefruit, apricot, orange zest, and light floral honey. Taste: slightly spicy, with a nice caramel sweetness on the malt side, with a pleasant wave of citrus, light resin, and some general soft earth. Finish: dries out nice and slow, with a lasting sweet-spicy-bitter note that’s perfectly balanced; palate was slightly slick, but in a good way. Notes: Man, I am a sucker for a good rye beer. This has got to be one of my absolute favorites ever. Absolutely blown away by the craftsmanship of this. Would drink again. Bottle from Ye Old Spirit Shop in Frederick, Maryland.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run, 4/4/15. Clear copper, large foamy off-white head. Good retention. Aroma of strong rye, herbal notes, caramel malt. The taste is fruity and bitter rye, toasted malt, caramel malt, piney finish. Thin-medium bodied, moderate lingering bitterness.

Nice looking mahogany colored beer with a rich light tan head. Spicy nose of cedar, resin, and burnt orange peel. Flavor starts with a tongue-coating bitterness of citrus and pine followed by wood and leather. The rye is subtle and comes through on the back end with a bit of sweet malt. Nice beer.

Draft at City Tap House DC. Pours a clear reddish amber/copper color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have some sweet malts, fruity, resiny and earthy hops, some spicy rye character early, caramel, finish was soft, ok.

Draft at The Answer The ale poured a dark clear amber with lacing. The head was closer to beige in color. This is an excellent rye ale with a spicy rye malt aroma with some citrus and resin. . Medium body ale had average carbonation. The hop bitterness and rye spiciness is assertive and swift, easily leveling out the malt sweetness for a well balanced swallow.

Nice rich amber and copper coloured body with a thinnish tan head. Super pungent aroma of bright resinous and piney hops with a large rye presence, some alcohol and a lot of dank bitterness - nice and mouthwatering. Medium-bodied; Assertive hop flavour with some nuts and earth coming through, hints of caramel and a rather large malt body showing the specialty grain characteristics and not a clean note at all. Aftertaste shows a rich caramel flavour with the hops coming hard and fast and a pleasant sweetness on the end. Overall, a nice, rich rye beer with a lot of complexity and a nice balance throughout. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Washington (Foggy Bottom, Eye Street NorthWest), DC on 15-January-2015 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 24-March-2015.

On tap at The Answer. Poured a medium reddish amber, slight head. Aroma was caramel accented malts, grainy, some slightly earthy and citric hops. Flavor matched, definitely more malt focused than hops. The low level of hop presence made the beer come off as a bit incomplete. Not bad, not great.

Tap @ Answer. Reddish with nice head and lacing. Smells like bread with an astringent hint. Almost.raising, a little astringent, finishes dry and lightly hoppy.
