Mont Des Cats is a trappist abbey in Northern France, a few kilometres from the Belgian border. They do not have a brewery in their monastery, so their beer cannot show the Authentic Trappist Product logo. But it doesn’t get much closer – they have their beer brewed by the monks of Chimay!
Developed independently to the Chimay range, the beer is a lovely copper colour. The link to Chimay is evident in the distinctive Chimay yeast character, in both the aroma and taste.
A pleasant caramel malt sweetness introduces the beer, being joined by hints of dried fruits, gentle spices and an earthy, herbal hop character. As the beer progresses, the bitterness seems to build toward a nice lingering finish.
The abbey only makes one beer, with no intention for more. The abbey is recognised as a Trappist Monastery, allowing them to use the term on the labeling. But as the beer is not brewed on their own premises, the beer is not a Trappist ale.

Bottled, 330ml at Clichy’s Tavern, Pigalle, Paris. Clouded amber with white head. There is a distinct Belgian yeast note to this, fruity, bubble-gum sweet alongside a herby, slightly peppery note. The sweetness persists though, reducing the enjoyment for me. Ends up a fairly average beer.

Herbaceous, peppery nose. Pours a clear amber with a big fluffy head and a lot of fizz. Flavour is pleasingly dry and bitter with less of the underpinning sweetness and fruit you get from many trappists. If there was such a thing as a session BSA, this would be a contender for it. Nice.

Hazy amber, huge fluffy offwhite head. Fruity and spicy malt aroma, wet paper. Flavour is malty with sweet citrus, orange and fruity caramel.

Aroma: zwak maar aangenaam fruit (zuurtjes). Uiterlijk: troebel met weinig schuim. Amberkleur. Lelijk! Smaak: vrij zoet.

In ogni caso promossa.

Bottle. Slightly hazy amber with big off white head. Very spicy with cloves, nutmeg, cumin, followed by sweet malts, caramel, dried plums and some fresh peach. Light bitter herbs in the finish. Medium bodied with full creamy carbonation. Nice beer.

Amber colour, thin head with lace and ring. Smell of dark fruits, citrus, candy, honey. Medium body, sticky palate. Normal carbonation. Taste is like the smell: dark fruits specially, with hints of caramel, honey and citrus.

A very good monk ale. Appearance is a pretty amber, with a thin tan head. Aroma is sweet, with a citrus and dark fruit tone mixed with malts. Taste has a full malty backbone with some dark fruit notes abd nuts. Palate is pretty rich and smooth. Pleasantly surprised with this one, definetly better than advertised. Taste is very full, reminds me of Chimay Blue, but not quite as complex or complete and not as smooth on the aftertaste.
