15/I/16 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ Claudia’s serrefeestje - BB: n/a (2016-33)

Little cloudy blond beer, creamy irregular off-white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: lots of tropical fruits, lychee, mango, grapefruit, pineapple. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: very fruity start, pineapple, lychee, lots of passion fruits, grapefruit, pretty bitter, sweet caramel malts. Aftertaste: citrus, bitter, fruity, very nice beer!

Bottle at home from Geers, Gent - BE. Color: clear copper golden beer with no carbonation and small white foam. Smell: hoppy and grassy domination. Candy notes. Caramel malt. Taste: full body with good caramel malt and candy notes. Good grassy and hoppy balance. Very bitter taste. Some resin notes. Aftertaste: resin and alcohol. Very nice realization. Not a winter beer but a really nice beer ! Candied and fruity with high hoppy bitterness.

Bouteille(Merci, le professeur!): deep golden, a bit unclear, small and stable creamy white head; exotic fruits and traces of cough-syrup in the drier bitter-malty nose; moderate to solid bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied, not very soft; lingering poney and fruity-exotic finish, hops stickin’ to the tongue. Quelle surprise!!! Quelle surprise…

My first Christmas beer of the season is from the highly regarded La Brasserie du Mont Saleve in France. Their Biere de Noël is a 7.2% hoppy pale ale (IPA?). I got it on sale at Cave a Bulles in Paris and just noticed the best before date was 5 days ago so figured I should crack it open. It looks beautiful, a lightly opaque honey gold with a light beige head that leaves a soapy type of belgian lace behind. The nose is fantastic, huge pine with mild spice & sweet malt notes. While it is pine it is the full spectrum of pineyness: earthy, woodsy, bright green pine needles, etc. For something brewed last year it’s held up very well. Med-full bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. The flavor is unexpectedly sweet, fruity & Rich with a mild hop bite in the finish. Candied fruit, fruitcake, marmalade & ashey, earthy pine. Good but I suspect it’d be even better fresh. It’s also an unexpected style for a Christmas beer. I hope to try more Mont Saleve again in the future.

Hoppy aroma of mangoes. It’s got a honey component in its taste. Not sure what American strong ale should be like. Feels like American pale ale to me. Advertised as Christmas ale on the bottle. It has nothing to do with Belgian Christmas ale.
