3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle shared with Nico, Philip and Felix. Pours slightly cloudy dark brown, almost black, barely detectable head. No lacing, but it has legs! Aroma of rye and pumpernickel bread. Taste starts slightly sour, dark fruits, dates, cereals, bread dough. Finishes tart and slightly bitter. Interesting, and worth trying again.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle sample (from notes). Clear dark amber brown, no carbonation and a sour red wine and whiskey aroma. Flavor was sour red grapes, oaky, earthy and finished dry with some alcohol (but not overpowering).

3.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark brown. Vinous, chocolatey, barrelly with rich deep fruit notes - a very complex nose. Fruity front, almost juicy with some tartness. Light chocolate on the palate as well, maybe a hint of barrel. The palate is probably not as full and realized as the aroma, the body maybe a shade thin.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, thanks Alex! Nice pop from the plastic cork. The color of the beer is the color of dark chocolate. Yields only scant head. Aroma is wholly unique. Chocolate is immediately apparent. Over that is funky barrel with fun sour organisms and cherries. Palate is dry, nearly woody, flat and somewhat thin. Flavors of sour cherry predominate, which then mellows out to smoothness. The flavors do not carry all the aromas. Not as much chocolate. There is lots of sherry instead. Nice flavors with dry finish. Very drinkable.

1.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
The aroma is sour, funky, and sweet with fruit, barnyard, and wood. The appearance is dark brown with a small head. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is thin and not very carbonated. Overall I don’t like this.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
[Bottle] shared by guerde. Pours a clear, burnt caramel with almost no head. Aroma has lots of red wine barrel character, which I am really thrilled about, plenty of tannin, caramel, cherry, and alcohol. The barrel doesn’t completely cover up the base beer, which is nice. Flavor is a bit thin and nearly flat, there is a nice sharp tartness in there, caramel, and cherry.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
No head on the dark brown body. Nearly all carbonation has faded from this over 14 month old bottle. The vinous character from the wine barrels is the only thing I can detect on the aroma. The body is slightly tart, with a faint hop and malt character, but mostly wine. I think I get a faint amount of carob on the finish. Very good for a barleywine, but a shadow of the the last bottle of Bran Reserva I tried and now wish I’d rated instead.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Lots of cherry, for sure, with notes of smoke and salami--very meaty. Thicky beer with roasted qualities, almost viscous. Coffee-like finish. Plenty of complexity and rather good considering that some Italian beers disappoint relative to the price-point. (This is still overpriced....) Bottle.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from MatSciGuy - thanks Levi! Pours deep, dark mahogany with very little carbonation or head. This was interesting given the cap/cork combo blew off like a gunshot when opened. The smell was nice--lots of dry red wine overlayed on some sweet, rich flavors, a little caramel, and some booze. Taste is the dry red wine, caramel, dark malt, with a tannic and dry finish. Lovely. Great legs and glass-coating. Mouthfeel was a little odd though--real thin and watery, which belied the rest of the beer. Gotta like red wine to like this one, but thankfully I do.
