alexanderj (1239), San Diego, California, USA Jul 8, 2008 Bottle; I think this is my first beer from Italy. Color was a nice dark, reddish-cola brown. Head was off white in color. Aroma was heavy on fruit, oak with a definite tartness presence. Thought I could pick up a bit of spice. Flavor was definite unusual for a barley wine, I am guessing its due to the wine aging. To me it just didn’t work that well and I just couldn’t get myself to really like it. Flavor was dominated by the oak/fruit flavors; a bit harsh; would have liked the underlying beer to shine through a bit better.
Floback (249), N-town, Florida, USA Aug 21, 2008 Bottle from Knightly Spirits. Pours a dark brown/black coffee color with no head. This has an incredibly effervescent aroma of fruits, caramel, and old room. Flavors are sour and chocolatey, yet robust with caramel and oak wood. Very wine-like with notes of pinot noir, cranberry, blueberry, and pomegranate. Medium/low carbonation and full body. Very complex and nicely balanced carbonation with the body. Alcohol content is hidden well. An excellent brew. Pailhead (2314), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Aug 16, 2008 Bottle: The aroma is very vinous with notes of sweet and tart cherries along with some chocolate and faint oak. It pours brown with some red highlights when held to the light. It has a small beige head that diminishes almost instantly. The flavor starts with a light mixture of chocolate and caramel and then turns light-moderately vinous. The finish has mild cherry and grape tartness along with some light oak. Medium bodied with minimal carbonation. goldtwins (3732), Nesconset, New York, USA Aug 8, 2008 RBSG ’08: Poured a dark brown color that looked like a glass of cola. Beige head. Tart fruity cherry aroma aand flavor with a mix of spices thrown in. The body was lighter than I expected. bdigi66 (443), Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA Aug 7, 2008 Bottle: Courtesy of pepsican...thanks Andy. I don’t think I’ve ever had anything quite like this...the pour looked like some of the finest balsamic vinegar ever and the aroma was sic. Big vinous notes with some dark malts, raisins, black cherries. There seems to be a very subtle vanilla and oak tone going on but the wine-like qualities pretty much overpower them. Lightly carbonated...dry, medium body. Starts slightly sweet and wine-like and then morphs into a dark, malty, fruity finish that has notes of chocolate and oak showing through. Fine brew. yespr (6361), Copenhagen O, Denmark Aug 6, 2008 37.5 cL bottle. Pours brown and with a lacing tan head. Dense fruity and malt aroma. Smooth and inviting. Dense fruity and slight woody base flavour. Smooth and slight acidic to fruity finish.
