3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draught at Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa. Chocolate and spice nose, dried fruits. Black with a low, bubbly head. Very chocolaty and fruity flavor, with quite a tart edge. Plums and raisins, a bit of coffee, and a dry and bitter finish. Full, cream, big mouth. A bit too sweet at first but finishes dry. Well, still a bit too sweet—but good. I would call this a Belgian Strong Ale, not a Barley Wine.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Large bottle from Domus Birrae in Rome. Great darkest brown pour with light tan head, quickly dissipating. nice, typical belgian brown nose: sweet molasses, robust dark malt and fruit. Coffee, cocoa nib, bright yeastiness. sticky, slightly off-bitter note. Would take this for a quad or strong belgian brune. really tasty.

On bottle. Dark colour, coffee aroma and smell. It is a very good job from Montegioco Brewery. Very flat froth with no persistence.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thanks Manuele! Dark brown, oily top with thinnest cream beige ring. Anise, chocolate, and earth in the nose, sweeter flavor has muted profile, light chocolate and anise, bit thin roast and chocolate through the short finish. A uniquely spicy barley wine without excess sugar.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Black pour with a tan head. Small head and no lacing left behind. Smells malty and a bit raisiny. Sweet taste. Slight bitterness. Very bitter on the back. Not a hop bitterness, but more of a tannin astringency. Raisins, figs, dates, plums. Mostly raisins, though. Sticky sweet mouth feel. Not cloying. Slightly bitter. Very decent beer. Not much like a barley wine though, but close enough.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of toasted and dark bread, moderate resin for the hops, leather and meat for the yeast, with background notes of raisin and a hint of licorice. Head is non-existent and the color is muddy dark brown with a decent amount of dark colored particles. Flavor starts moderately sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium to full, oily with carbonation that is almost flat, and finishes lightly astringent, moderately alcoholic and dry. An excellent slow drinker, it’s bold and rich, but some of the finer points of a Barley Wine are lost on it.
