What to expect from an Italian barley wine? Discovery is what it’s about and this one did it well with a deft focus on fruitiness. Cloudy deep brown to prune bodied covered by a 1cm lasting head. Incredible range of fruit flavours reached on make for a vinous, almost juicy offerings where you can feel the 8.5% ABV, but it passes well under this vinous side. So yeast and malt interplays produce an all-in fruity range over a solid toasty foundation. Forget about hops in here, they were not invited. Strong raisins - dried-, figs, blueberries, this is not particularly complex, but still a most pleasant potion. If anything, I’d welcome some tannins to carry the sweetness away towards the end.

Bottle. Dark brown with purple tints and a small head. Aromas are chocolate and liquorice with coffee and berries. Molasses with some smokiness. Flavours are sweet molasses with vinous berries. Caramel with some nutty notes. Woody towards the finish. Good.

Bottle at home ... from my GBBF haul ... rich sweet vinoues malt nose ... not really a barley wine nose ... sweet rich plums ... heavy malt ... toasted oats ... quite sweet ... medium bitter ... medium carbonation ... bit too heavy and intense...

Bottle. Muddy brown beer with a hopped, subtle vinous and malty aroma. The flavour is largely roasted, nicely bitter and hopped. Overall a very nice gently bitter and roasted beer.

Bottle courtesy of Ibrew2or3. Pours a deep bvrown amber with a one finger tan head that fades to a ring leaving good lacing. Aroma of dark fruit, caramel, light roasted malt, and some floral hops. Taste is the same as aroma but more prominent. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Very good.

The bottle didnt explode like most Italian brews we have opened during our tastings. This may have broken a stream of something like six in a row. It did creep up the neck as I was readying my glass. Pours dark brown with thin mocha head. The aroma is dark fruitiness and musty fruit to go along with faint molasses and earthiness. The taste is rich and slightly musty with dark fruitiness. Just after a red wine fruit flavor and tannins shows by about midway. It dries out into the finish where notes of roastiness, nuttiness and faint earthiness surface and take the experience to closure. Very nice.

courtesy of ibrew2or3. Thanks Dave for this amazing offering. Have yet to be disappointed by anything Montegioco has brewed. Pours black with beige/yellowish head. Aroma of dark fruits and barley. Taste, roasted, nice caramel malts, with notes of chocolate. Finish is yeasty, rich flavor and again one can note the light presence of chestnut that seems to characterize so many Italian beers.

The aroma is toasty and fruity with coffee and malt. The appearance is deep brown with a tan head. The taste is like the aroma with a somewhat funky taste but overall its like a stout. The palate is smooth. Overall its interesting but not lovable.
