leghorn99 (24) - Livorno, ITALY - OCT 10, 2014

dark, toasted but fruity almost sweet old ale with some sour points and medium body, very tasty and good complexity.

This one is a good few years old. Bran flakes an blackberries on the nose. Sweet black cherries fil the mouth entirely. Absolutely beautiful subtle and smooth. No hint of the alcohol at all. Cherries, cherries, cherries. Crazy drinkable.

Squisita.

Opaque black/brown with a foamy tan head and streaks of fine lace. Taste begins with roasted malt full of plums, currents, raisens, and sloe, on a bed of earthy bran. It grows through the palate to a mild bitter finish that goes on for a long time before dissapating to a neat vanilla that caps it off. Complex and interesting, it solidly delivers an earthy grain quality similar to heavy grains that give life to homemade bread. Good stuff!

biereflaneuse (22) - Certaldo, ITALY - AUG 22, 2013
33cl bottle bought from the brewer, aged two years in cellar. This dark ale has the bitter and toasted notes of an imperial stout without being one; "Bran" is surely one of the best brews by Montegioco. Unfortunately it is not very easy to find.

Ragnampiza (512) - Rome / Lecce, ITALY - MAR 2, 2014
2013 vintage (9% ABV instead of 8.5%), 330 ml bottle from ArtigianBeer served in a Teku glass. Pitch black, absolutely no light passing through, with an average light brown head which doesn’t last very long. Rich and inviting aroma, some light spices (cinnamon and vanilla), toasted malts, blackberries and dark fruits, milk chocolate and espresso coffee. Difficult to consider it a classic barley wine, since there are so many RIS/Imperial Porter qualities in this beer, but it’s certainly less bitter, more sweet, and definitely more balanced, elegant and harmonius. Slightly fruity, again blackberries but also notes of raisins/plumbs, ending with a pleasent white chocolate and coffee aftertaste. No trace of the alchool at all, which is both amazing and scary for how drinkable it is. Soft carbonation, medium to full body and oily texture. Great!

This beer pours black with no head. The aromas are roasted chocolate and light coffee as is the flavor. Cheers!

Bottle shared (and bought) by Haukur. Black pour with a nice head looks like a stout. Aroma has much candi sugar and fruit sweetness, with an odd mustard seed thing going on. Oaty taste, with a great body, some bitter malts and dark chocolate. Some spice and mint. Deeply complex. Like a cross between a strong, dry stout and a sweet barleywine. Delicious.
