Commercial Description:
“Monteith’s 140 West Coast Pale Ale is a true New Zealand premium ale,” says brewer Barrie Calder. “It’s brewed with New Zealand-grown Cascade hops giving it a striking citrus-pine hop aroma."

330mL Bottle. Aroma of caramal and of NZ Hops. Tastes strongly of caramal, is slightly hollow mid-swallow, and finishes with a slight bitterness tang. Could be thicker on the palate for a Pale Ale. To me this beer has gone over the top with caramal malt, and hense tastes too much like a typical mainstream NZ beer.

Clear light copper, decent eggshell head that holds up nicely and generates some scant lace early on. Low aroma of sweet fruit fruity hops and caramel malt. The palate is mostly caramel malt with low hop character. Finish is mildly bitter. Lacking the expected character of a true pale ale. A bit of a disappointment.

dark red in colour with white head which disappeared quickly. Sweet malty hop aroma. Thin hoppy flavour with hoppy bitterness. Great quaffer.

Tasted just after its release. Aroma is slight oxidised with diacetyl with a hint of hop, flavour is again oxidised diacetyl, the malt profile is to sweet with not enough hop bitterness or flavour. Not a good example. The bottle was very fresh so there must of been a packaging problem. Will try agian if they release.

Bottle at Beervana. Poured copper. Aromas of hops a subtle sweetness. Some definite vanilla notes in the taste, well hopped with some of the alcohol coming through. A very malty pale ale. Leaves a yeastyness in the mouth.

Draught, a clear copper with a filmy head. A sweet malty aroma - caramal and earthy. A caramal malt palate with a grainy bitterness and a chemical sourness. The only thing ’pale’ about this is that it pales in comparison to a proper Pale Ale.
