Black has the right body to be able to enjoy a quiet one or to drink when your having a big one. I love the chocolate and roasted malt flavours in a beer which is dark and creamy. Highly enjoyable. cheers

A personal favourite when visting kiwi land. Have tried off tap and now in bottle, and the bottle is best. It's a dark brew with creamy head. Burnt malt and a light chocolate flavour blends nicely giving an enjoyable drinking experience.

Starts well but finishes too thin. Good honest flavours not compromised by chemicals. Light enough in body and palate to be enjoyed year round. I found chocolate but no coffee -- and less of a taste "hit" than Tooheys Old. This is v-e-r-y drinkable.

Bottled. Nice beer. Very drinkable - it slips down smooth and easy with bags of roasty toasty chocolate and coffee flavours, a delicate sweetness, an endearing oiliness and a lip smacking finish that it's all gone before you have time to take notes. I'll get this one again!

This is a good impression of the Czech Blacks like Kozel or Purkmistr. This brewery has done very well, even though ther is not the presence of noble hops. Great mouthfeel, blance and nice burnt aroma and flavour

Poured dark brown, lovely clear amber tint when you hold it up to a light. Short beige head that lasted about 20 seconds. Slightly fruity aroma, bit of roasted grain there too. Not a bad taste, nothing amazing though. Initially sweet malt flavour followed by a slightly bitter tang and a smokey/burnt aftertaste. Mouthfeel is rather smooth, bit fuller in feel than tooheys old which is a good thing.

Once again with Monteith's beers, the head dies really fast, inoffensive, bland, slightly hoppy, a bit burnt, slightly artificial with some chemicals present, I would drink this again. Decent beer.

UPDATED: JAN 11, 2003 This is good shit. Despite the rant on the label about the complexity yielded from the use of 5 different malts, all I got was a really burnt chocolate taste which is fuckin fine by me. For all those Aussies tryin to decide on a new sixy from the Marly bottle-o --- its like Tooheys old taken to its logical conclusion (i.e. actually using dark malts for flavour) mixed with whatever motor oil CUB add to Sheaf Stout: wicked!!! It went down well nice after toking on a mad spliff too.

Heady floral aroma of lilac soap, (just like grannies fave). I may have had a dud cos this beer had no head and very low carbonation. Beautiful roasty malt flavour, biscuity, leatherwood. Will try again despite it’s flatness.
