2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
On tap. Everything is average on this beer. It is not bad, but nothing extraordinary either. The flavour has the potential to be a bit more complex than an ordinary Schwarzbier, but it does not make it much further. It will still be my choice out of the Monteith’s family in any pub.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
330 ml bottle
Pours like cola, settles black with ruby tints. One finger light brown head with good web like lacing. Settles to a fine film.
Nose is lots of roast, coffee, some rolled oats, and slight aroma of caramel.
Coffee, roast, licorice, slight sweet malts and caramel taste.
Palate is good lingering roast and coffee. Slightly thin in the mid palate but decent in the finish.
Nothing too bad but nothing earth shattering.

Poured an opaque black with a red tint. No head; no lace. Aroma of roasted grain and a slight malt sweetness. Taste of sweet malt, roasted grain and caramel. Medium to light body. Short smooth finish.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Nice dark poor, some nice coffee and roast notes come through on this beverage. Over all an easily drinkable and enjoyable beer.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
330ml Bottle: best before the end of Oct 2012, whoops. Poured into a Westvleteren chalice on 7th Dec 2012, a bit late!
Looked impressive: lovely dark body with a deep tan head of foam (well for 60 seconds anyway).
Initial aroma leans towards a Stout maltiness smell and mild chocolate notes waft through the air: good for a Black Lager.
The taste is also Stoutish, but with the lager crispness reminding you this isn’t at ale based beer. Those aforementioned chocolate notes can be found it the taste as well as in the nose along with slightly burnt caramel flavour.
A lot better than I thought it would be and could well be my highest scoring beer of this style so far.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
(Bottle) Appears black, but is very dark ruby, with a short lived beige head. Aroma is hints of chocolate and raisins. Medium body and medium carbonation. Flavour is simple and light starting with some dark roast malt and finishing with some bitterness. It’s an easy drinking dark beer; pleasant enough but disappointing - deserving of faint praise.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark brown/black with a beige head. Oaky, nutty roasted aroma. Taste is really empty. It’s nice, of smoke and roast, but so thin. Not a bad attempt - but not great.
