Poured an opaque black with a red tint. No head; no lace. Aroma of roasted grain and a slight malt sweetness. Taste of sweet malt, roasted grain and caramel. Medium to light body. Short smooth finish.

One of my first dark craft beers and was quite enjoyable. Poured very dark, but was very viscous at the same time. Was met by less than an inch of head that disappeared quite quickly. No carbonation. Aroma was probably the best thing about the beer, with initial smells of dark chocolate. Taste was different from other dark beers, very rich chocolate cake which downed to the classic dark beer taste and finally to a coffee aftertaste. Not my favourite type of beer but as far as the genre goes, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

330 ml bottle bought at Great Food hall in Pacific Place, Admiralty during the ‘New Zealand food festival’ promotion.

Clear deep blackish brown colour; Less than one-quarter finger head and soapy beige foam which fades in 20 seconds; Good sticky lacing and near zero carbonation; Sweet aroma of dark malt, with strong roastyness, nuts, caramel, toffee, cream, sugar, coffee, soy sauce, very light chocolate, biscuits and strawy grass; Mid to light sweet taste of strongly roasted dark malt, with light smoked meat, light caramel, toast, Cola, cream crackers, lemon, light lime, moderate bitter hops and grass; Light body. Thin and slightly slick palate; Mouth feel is thick, very malty, thoroughly roasted with light smokiness with flashes of smoked salmon and bacon. Beyond that, taste is a little short: mostly light caramel and Cola background, yeast, cream crackers and hops. Not much coffee, choco or cream. The fat black malt and light smoke somehow make up the deficit. Okay… Hoppiness is strawy nose. Good lemon, light lime and moderate hoppy grassy taste; Bitterness is moderate for an abrupt, very light bitter finish; Fairly dry after taste, Light smoky and malty to mouth.

Comments: This one moved away from the usual low malt-coffee-chocolate formula, in comes the strongly-roasted dark malts with fair touch of light smokes to complement the rich aroma, but otherwise the taste is a little bare. Still, you don’t come across a fulfilling Schwarz very often. A decent one!

Tastes like a okay black beer, nothing inoffensive but nothing struck me as exciting, I haven’t drank enough of this type to really offer much more, will revisit this review when I am more experienced with this type

33cl bottle bb06/2014, bierpost, drunk 05/2014. Nice bottle and label design. More of a Schwarz/porter crossover, with obvious coffee-roasted malts, off-key (corn?) syrup elements showing up amid coy hop presence and somewhat tired yeast profile. Certainly not a bad Foreign Schwarz. Only what is that label text doing there "Some beers are easier to brew than others..." (follows: an interesting exercise in NZ brewing bathos).

On tap @ Shakespears’, Auckland. At least I think it was at Shakespears’.New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma has roasted malts. Black coloured beer with a thin, off-white head. The taste is light roasted, has some coffee tones. Quite some carbonation. Thin, watery mouthfeel.

In glass is a brown red beer with a small and beige stable head, the aroma is quite shallow, but the coffee and caramel notes coming from the malt are really clear. In palate has a medium body, with a smooth texture and soft coffee flavors and a good bitterness at the end. Being a Schwarzbier should be served chilled.

Pours an opaque black with a creamy tan head that holds firm. Very malty aroma with some stonefruit and and coffee. Flavour matches the aroma and is slightly dominated by roasty malt flavour. Hop bitterness is somewhat more pronounced than many dark beers. Surprisingly easy drinking.

OLD NOTES JAN 5, 2004 The aroma has a fair bit of roasted malt and coffee chocolate to it. Maybe a bit of dark fruitiness in there too. Pours black with a dark orange tinge and a fading head. A roasted malt kind of body. Get a fair bit of coffee and toffee towards the end. A few little dark chocolate and fruit flavours in there, maybe plum. Finish with a bit of metalic bitterness. Not bad, certainly much more full bodied than other Monteiths beers i’ve sampled.

Schwarzes Bier mit geringem Schaum. Geruch röstmalzig süß. Geschmack röstmalzig, erdig, minimal säuerlich. Ein einfaches Schwarzbier!
