1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
500 ml bottle at Chapel Bar. Pours golden with a good head. Aroma is of malt. Taste is like porridge with a bitter aftertaste.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Thanks to Caro for this birthday present. Looks handsome in the glass with its bold golden hue, large fluffy slowly diminishing head and rich lacing. A little weak on aroma at Monteiths recommended 8 degrees; floral hops, caramel, biscuit, citrus, cardboard, bandaid. Moderately sweet, moderate to moderate-heavy bitter. Alcohol numbing palette [sic] creamy almost lightly chewy. Second half paired ok with a Baigan bhartha Indian curry. One of the best Monteiths I have had though nothing to rave about here. Couldn’t help but add this:
A thin board or slab on which an artist lays and mixes colors.
The range of colors used by a particular artist or in a particular picture.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Nose : Floral, citrus, vanilla, cream.
Taste of rounded malt, vanilla, some noble hop coming through. Creamy.
Not bad but hops are really lacking here, deff not the definition of Pilsener. More like a very decent lager.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aroma sweet biscuity malt with a hint of floral hops. As noted below, they were a bit bashful with the flavours but still got enough of them in the pot to make quite a nice lager, and an easy-drinking 7% one at that. Probably the best Monteith’s I’ve had. Extra two points for being good value for money at the supermarket.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
It certainly is a good looking beer. Beautiful golden colour with plenty of sparkling carbonation and a fluffy white head. The aroma is of perfumy hops, light and floral. I think it could afford to be a little more pungent. There is good body with excellent spritzy mouthfeel. There seems to be quite a tang of heady alcohols which leaves a lightly warming sensation but is just a little unnecessary. Why not lower the alcohols down to about 5% and call it a pilsner rather than attempting an imperial just to hand over more excise tax to the government. I would have thought of an imperial pilsner as being more of everything - more flavour, more aroma and more remarkable. This isn’t a bad nudge but does require a little more tweaking to get right I think.
Whoever did the label spelled palate incorrectly.

Finally I think we have a decent effort here by one of the big boys in NZ. Little happening on the nose (cornflakes?) and poured quite clean with little head. This at least has some flavour and is pleasant to drink unlike some Monteiths beers - Radler and Summer I am looking at you!). Not dominated by hops or malts but it has enough to make it more than a typical swilling beer. Little bit lagery on the finish. Spelling mistake on palette is theirs...
