2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
This is not what you think of when you think IPA. This pours like an IPA. Good copper colour with decent head, perhaps a bit light on colour. That's where the compliments stop. The hop aroma is light and grassy instead of pronounced and citrus sweet. The flavor is more sweet than hoppy, and in fact there is very little desirable hop characteristics whatsoever. The beer is reasonably enjoyable, but is certainly not an IPA

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
(Bottle) Hazy golden amber with decent whitish head. Aroma has biscuit and peppery spice. Nice palate; medium bodied with mouth filling soft carbonation. Taste is biscuity malt with some peppery notes and a steadily developing, rather harsh, bitterness that leaves a quite unpleasant aftertaste. Oval, rather disappointing, but quite drinkable.

Fresh aroma of citrus fruit nice head when poured. Pale amber colour. Nice fresh flavours in the mouth and hint of malty sweetness on the end. Overall a nice easy going introduction style of IPA but lacks deppth of more craft IPAs

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
From a 500ml bottle on 19/5/2013. Pours a clear light golden with a medium head. Smells more like a pale lager than an IPA, with just a slight grainy malt aroma. The flavour is most pedestrian for the style - I’d struggle to pick this as an APA, let alone an IPA. There’s a modest fruitiness to it, with some bready malt in the background, with a mild bitterness finishing things off. The body and carbonation are medium. The 35 IBUs advertised on the bottle provide a good hint that this will be an underwhelming experience, and it is. A very poor IPA.

500ml bottle from BWS. Bright orange colour with a small head of foam. Aroma is quite modest with not a lot coming through. In the mouth the beer has good mouthfeel and body. Hints of vanilla in the flavour. Overall not too bad.

Look, I realise hops are expensive in both New Zealand and Australia but this is getting ridiculous with these macro’s shining the light on their ’generous’ hop use in their descriptions only to deliver such sub-par efforts as this one. I used an etched glass which was a fail as it quickly rose up and out the lip; a little for the glass and a lot for the kitchen counter. Settles an honourable orange amber and sparkling with a good two inches of plumage. Grain mainly on the nose; toasted wholemeal, pumpernickel (?), Weet-Bix™ cereal, just a fluff of spice. Nutty, husky, slightly phenolic, burnt toast and caramel blend on the palate doused by sticky and cloying marmalade-esque notes in back and into the linger Body is cumbersome and awkward as it warms becoming gammy. Yet another dreary Monteith’s effort. (50cL, BBE 07/13, BWS Ellenbrook)
