alepig666 (78), Adelaide, Australia Jul 23, 2009 Poured black that shows up red under light, minimal light tan head. Wheaty aroma with lots of sweet malt and toffee, very nice! Taste of mostly sweet malt, with nice wheat in the background, slight hop bitters and a bit of burnt toffee and chocolate. Swallow is mild yet flavoursome, with an aftertaste of mostly the aforementioned malts, with a nice mild bitter hop aftertaste settling in after a while. Definitely not true to the doppelbock style, but still a brilliant brew in it’s own right. If they righted the false advertising I’d give it a medium 4 at least. Nicko (187), Ashfield, Australia Jun 27, 2009 I didn’t think beers were able to advertise that they had the power to ’cheer yourself up’.First doppelbock, albeit a weak one, nothing to gauge it against really. Not much in aroma, burnt coffeee, treacle, scotch in the mouth. I’ll have to agree with others here that it’s a bit thin in the body. Not totally choice, still depressed Bazal (13), Australia Jun 23, 2009 This is ok. Pours a nice, dark brown with an espresso head. A beautiful aroma of mocha and a bit of caramel. The aroma is actually the best part of this in my opinion. It’s a little thin in the mouth where it could be a lot richer, and is a little lacking in flavour with an odd metallic tang at the end. The flavour is coffee and demerera sugar, but it’s weak and fleeting, sadly. A decent enough drop, but ultimately a let down. This could have been much better. DuffMan (2721), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada Mar 8, 2009 Pours a dark brown with a modest vanilla head showing medium retention. Brown sugar, toffee, bread crusts, and fruitcake are all in here, but just not in great abundance. Nice flavour, but a little on the thin side, needs more body. kempicus (350), Wellington, New Zealand Sep 30, 2008 Is this an ale or a lager? It got a bronze at brewnz in the strong ales and lagers section so still no resolution there....i assume it’s a lager because all their other shit is....this one’s not tooo bad though, lacks a bit of body (and alc% a full 1% off the minimum for the style according to BJCP) to be a true doppelbock....in fact it lacks a lot of everything ! To be fair though it’s probably the best of a very bad lot! UnholyBrewing (448), Melbourne(Mulgrave), Australia Sep 2, 2008 ...bottle. Poured a darkish brown with decent carbonation, and small off-white head that faded quickly with no lacing. On the nose, hints of chocolate, slightly roasted malts, caramel, and something else I couldn’t pick out. Flavor was not that great, something just wasn’t right. Not a bock, or a doppel. This one just didn’t taste right to me. Finish was dry with a weird lingering aftertaste. Samma (51), Australia Aug 11, 2008 irrespective of the misnaming, this is a pelasure to drink. Lovely dark brown in hue, well-balanced palate with loads of chocolate and malt. Lovely winter beer. KiwiJonno (70), Christchurch, New Zealand Jul 31, 2008 330mL Bottle. My first DoppelBlock, though I understand its not a "true" one being only 6% alc/volume. Very malty aroma. Poors a dark brown/red colour which is clear. Big long lasting head. Sweet and complex malty beer, thats also clean tasting being a lager. Malt aftertaste dominates. Reletively thick on the palate. Nice beer to have a couple off.
