Had this on tap at the brewery. Deep brown with ruby hints and was almost flat with no head. Lots of caramel sweetness and the alcohol becomes apparent as it warms a bit.
Hops don’t make an appearance. A decent beer, but not a particularly good doppelbock.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: SEP 13, 2016 Bottle 330ml. Served at room temperature. Pours a deep dark ruby. Head is foamy, very lightly tanned and lasts well in the glass. Aroma is of toasted malts, cooked brown sugar, brown bread, chocolate, dark cherries, raisins and hints of liquorice. Flavour is smooth with a light roasted bitterness, raisin toast, prunes, dark chocolate, aniseed, grains and nuts. Medium bodied with medium carbonation and a dry, toasty finish. Would make for an awesome winter ‘session’ ale!

Ok, so they used to call this just Monteith’s Doppelbock (7%) then it became Monteith’s Doppelbock Winter Ale (6%) now it’s back to Monteith’s Doppelbock but it’s still 6%. Alles klar? 330ml bottle into schooner glass. Light chocolate nose. Mahogany red beer with thin white head. Laces well. Light body, chocolate taste and finish. A little sour late on. Unspectacular but easy drinking (especially for 6%!).

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottled, 330ml from The University Club, Oxford. Brown with cream head. There is a fullness to the flavour with this, rich, roasty malts alongside a slightly spiced character, which is better for me than an overly spiced character. Sweetish, but not overly so. Very drinkable, particularly at £2 a bottle.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours mid brown with decent clingy head. Aromas of hazelnut. Taste follows on with hints of Nutella. This lingers with some sweet maltiness through to the finish.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a rather dark brown color, topped with a small and lasting tan head. There is a strong and very pleasant chocolate aroma. Delicious. The taste starts slightly sweet and chocolatey, some roasted malts and finishes with a little bitterness. creamy and tasty.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very nice beer, it a little light in aroma, taste and alcohol strength for a true dopplebock. However, it is well priced (when you can get it) and great introduction if you bringing someone over to the style from the lighter ales.
Great to drink several as it isn’t too strong.
Happy to recommend, but if you are a serious doppelbock connoisseur you will find it weaker in every sense. Think of it as a sessional dopplebock. Which is why I buy it - enjoy the taste and can have two or three as opposed to one with the stronger brands. Plus it isn’t super cold in Qld, Australia during winter so a 6% dopplebock makes a lot of sense.
BTW pours well with several fingers of foam, but it does disappear fairly quickly.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Regardless of the style, I found this quite a tasty number but, due to cloying sweetness at the back I couldn’t, and wouldn’t want to drink more than one.
