COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Monteith’s Doppelbock Winter Ale is a smoothly rich beer with a dense head, a powerful aroma, and chocolatey malt notes – the perfect way to cheer yourself up this winter. Doppelbock Winter Ale replaces the previous Monteith’s Winter Ale seasonal release which boasted cinnamon and clove flavour cues.

Had this on tap at the brewery. Deep brown with ruby hints and was almost flat with no head. Lots of caramel sweetness and the alcohol becomes apparent as it warms a bit. Hops don’t make an appearance. A decent beer, but not a particularly good doppelbock.

Thick fruity aroma. Dark black with reasonable head. Heavy coffee flavor with little aftertaste. Medium body with low to medium carbonation.

Aroma malt dominated with clove and spice, moderate tan to off white head, dark garnet red. Taste malt driven caramel, clove and spice with choc, some alcohol character. Warm toasty goodness. Full body, moderate carb, well balanced.

The head is medium, the body dark red. It smells maltaromtic, sweet, bit plum. The taste is malty, fruity, biit plum, bit bitter. In the aftertaste more bitter. This Doppelbock has a good taste and it is nice to get it here on Stewart Island. On Stewart Island it is maybe the best beer you can get, but compared to German Doppelbocks this one could be much more intensive. 3.5

Dark copper colour with a thin head. Good carbonation. Nose: good malted aroma with notes of chocolate and caramel. Taste: Malts above all, chocolate and caramel, balanced between sweet and bitter. No hops in your mounth. Interesting finish. Just a little bit watery body.

Draught, part of a tasting paddle, at Union Hotel in Newtown, Sydney, on July 11, 2013.
Clear semi dark reddish brown color, teal head. Malty, bread, rye taste. Grainy aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, a bit low on the co2, medium bitterness. Malty, bread, rye scent.

Pours dark brown. High carbonation. Very defined chocolate notes with caramel finish. Some metallic aftertaste however which distracts from the flavour slightly. A decent dark beer.

Bottle. Pours a cola black colour with a red hue as per description on the back of the bottle. Aroma. I can smell espresso coffee, with notes of Chocolate, cream and biscuit. Taste. I can taste espresso coffee right away with also some chocolate notes and general toasty flavours. Overall. Good beer, nothing special.

Not a terrible beer but by no means fantastic. I liked the slight maltiness but it lacked much more else.

Pours a clear brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is quite malty with some chocolate, caramel and toasty notes. Taste is medium sweet leading to a malty finish. Decent stuff.

Pours a dark cherry color with a small thick head that fades to bits of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruit with a bit of chocolate and trace of spice. Taste of roasted malt dark fruit, with a bit of nuts, chocolate and coffee. Mild bitterness and a dry finish. Fairly light body, smooth with a decent balance. Could be a bit more robust. Not a flashy beer.
