4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
330ml bottle, 2011 edition, 2468 of 2500. Pours a thick, opaque black, with a very small tan head, which nevertheless lasts well and leaves decent lacing. The aroma has notes of butterscotch, Bailey’s and Irish whiskey, as well as some lurking herbal hops. Bitter herbal hops up front lead through a touch of oak to honeyed, raisin and toffee muscat, which gives it a luscious feel. There is some Irish whiskey in a warming finish, and a lingering butterscotch flavour. This is a really superb imperial stout. Its very individual flavours stand out from the crowd of standard stouts, and its warming, luscious feel really elevates it above them.

Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Thanks to Josh for another rare opportunity to try Australian craft beer. Opaque dark brown stout with a small pale tan head. Light airy palate, slightly soft. Good tangy dark malts, little dark chocolate and a whisper of coconut. There is a fruity something going on as well. Light dry finish. Comes together well. Tasty.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottled 33 cl, stubbie, after the brewery tour at Moorilla Estate Brewery, Winery, and Gallery, Hobart, on August 9, 2013.
In the tasting bar, after nagging them to finally look enough for it to find it.
2010 vintage, bottle 0593/2500. Marked 8.0% ABV.
They couldn’t find the 2011 vintage, I was happy for the 2010 though! $25 a bottle.
Clear black color, some dark red and brown hints. Brown head. Sweet, coconut, vanilla, roasted, nice scent. Sweet, alcohol, grainy, roasted, coffee taste. Coffee aftertaste. Medium to smooth mouthfeel, medium high bitterness.
Very nice, one of the best beers I had on my 5 week trip in Oz, so happy I kept bothering the staff until they located one for me. Kept well with age too.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Thanks Bluebetty. Pours completely opaque black with a nice, staying, creamy beige head. Aroma has roasted malts, light dusty, chocolate and coffee, mild astringent oakiness with some vanilla and grapes. Medium to low carbonation, creamy and quite dry mouthfeel. Flavour has lots of oak character, red wine, grapes, vanilla. Lots of roasted malts and coffee that expands in the aftertaste. Fine astringency. Good Barrel aging.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black with tan head. Quite yeasty with malt behind. Taste is big dark malt richness, over carbonated, bit astringent (tannins overload), mild vanilla, barrel flavour also. Maybe too much going on here. Not a great aftertaste though. Overall, super interesting, but not one I had much fun with.
