Brown/black body with short dark tan head. Smoke and liquorice on the aroma. Taste is ok but I probably would go with version one as a favourite, whisky notes straightaway then liquorice and dark chocolate, notieable alcohol though still drinkable.

Deep black with a small but thick, attractive, coffee coloured head. Good lacing. Smoke and peat dominate the aroma. Initial flavours if smoke dominated whisky, a touch of alcohol although it does not detract and then dry roasted malts typical of a foreign stout, leading to a long, delicious whisky finish. Fantastic beer.

330mL bottle. Pours black with a small mocha head. Aroma of rum and raisin chocolate with sherry fruit cake thrown in for good measure and a smokey back drop. Whisky like feel in the mouth, kind of bland, smokey notes although the flavour seems lacking some how.

Intensely dark beer! Opaque jet black body with thick brown(!) head. Menacing!
Aroma more restrained than expected, yet still pronounced; meaty roast grains, rich caramels and biscuit, woody smoke with some citrusy hops.
Big rich body, quite smooth almost velvety, lingers long on the palate with moderate carbonation.
Plenty to offer on the body - cocoa, toffee, charred wood, subtle dried fruits with earthy peat undertones and cooked citrus hops. Firm bitterness.
Very decent smoked/oaked stout. Certainly not overdone, with good balance. Great stuff!

Looks lovely. Smell is smoky belgian abbey yeast. Not my sort of thing. Flavour is rich smoky malts, nice bubbly yeastiness on palate. Big mouthfeel. Definitely looking forward to Black Lung III, but this didn’t quite do it for me.

Great beer. Bottle poured into a snifter. Big and complex aroma heavy on the smoke. Big and complex taste - again heavy on the smoke but I did not find it too dominating or overpowering as others seemed to - notes of whiskey and chocolate definitely there. Great beer. Wish I could find it in the US and I would buy a case!

At just on cool and into a snifter. Jet black with a lot of ’breadcrumb’ yeasty goodness in there that quickly settles to the base of the glass. A little pad of tannish cream settles atop and is mostly lasting. Ash, lots of smoke, charred oak and cigarette tar dominate the nose with lashings of Biltong jerky, burnt bacon rashers, smoked herring, dark chocolate and sticky, over reduced berry khoulis. The rauch malt dominated the first sip and sent a shiver down my spine. Creamy and full in body; rounded and silky in mouthfeel with a dry finish and light warmth provided by the ABV. Heavily smoky, ashen and laden with heady smoked meat flavours and whisky with a supple dark choc icecream note late that balances it all out. I’ve had a few strange deserts in my time that have smoked meats sidle chocolate ganache and savoury fruit like raisins and sultanas and this one holds its own in the strange but works department. The beer touches the lips with a twinkle of hairy, wild yeast notes. Lip smacking amount of dark, rich and smoky malts play well long after each sip. While it is ashen it also shows a little of the oak and vanillin expected of a BA beer. This one is a surprise. Two thumbs up Moon Dog. This one is an absolute cracker of a slow sipper. Delicious. Sampled at an ESBLS tasting. It poured a dark brown/black color with a small tan head. The aroma was rich dark chocolate and a little ashy with a touch of whiskey. The taste was again whiskey with dark cocoa and some smokiness This was an awesome beer.

Pours black with a large, lasting tan head.
Nose shows smoke, whisky, a faint sour/funky notes and heavy peat. Too much reliance on the peat.
Very similar flavours, again with lots of peat and smoke. Other than that there’s some soft roasted malt but not very expressive.
Carbonation seems a bit full on.
Could have worked really well, unfortunately the peat tramples over everything else, preventing the whisky and roasted malt complexities from showing.

Everything I wanted it to be! Black with hints of red shining through. Small head which retains nicely through the drinking. Aroma rich and sweet with hint of smoke. Big long palate, quite astringent from the oak, but well balanced by a bit of residual sweetness. Love it. Someone buy me a case.
