The first one (still one of our favourite Moon Dog beers) spent time inside Bourbon barrels; the second – the intensely smokey, woody one – made wild whoopee with the inside of former whisky barrels. This time around it’s rum (from Hoochery Distillery) and the results are closer to the balance between beer and barrel of the first affair. The effects of the barrel are prominent without being overpowering and some rumminess (which we’re pretty sure has a different meaning to what we intend, something to do with Benny Hill or 1950’s pier end postcards from Southend, Essex) comes through as the beer warms. The oak adds a drying quality to the beer too, which holds up nicely to an evening’s sipping, with or without pipe and slippers.

UPDATED: APR 9, 2014 Mild sweet aroma, strong smokey favour, rum is definitely there too. It?s a very strong, intense beer, not for the faint of heart.

Fare thee well Josh tasting at Bruce’s. Thanks to our Josh for another Australian rarity. Opaque dark brown - black beer. Small pale tan - cream head. Nose is an unusual mixture of smoke and flowers. Palate is light, softish and semi dry. Light tangy dark malt, little dark chocolate. Mild smoke and tcp. Not getting any rum, mores the pity. Light finish. Not bad.

Bottle at Josh’s Farewell bash, thanks to the man himself, 20/02/14. Extremely dark mahogony brown meets light black with moderate tan spotting/edgework. Nose is light smoke, medicinal tones, TCP, dark roast, toffee, ashtray, all about the smoke. Taste comprises lighter levels of smoke, dark maltings, dark toffee, pinch of spice. Medium + bodiment, fine carbonation. Ok smoke laden impy.

Bottle shared in London at Josh’s farewell tasting. Thanks to Josh himself for this Aussie treat! Pours clear, dark brown with a creamy beige head. Novel aroma, a bit of smoked malts, perhaps some burnt meat. Light to medium sweet flavor with smoke, burnt ham, minerals, a bit of basement must. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Musty dark malt finish, some smoke, dank earth. Interesting.

Bottle thanks to Josh. It pours near black with as all tan head. The nose is rich roast, plum, prune, candy, port, wood, rum, smoke, medicinal and vinous notes. The taste is prune, plum, roasted malt, toast, earth, faint burnt notes, medicinal notes and good bitterness with a dry finish. Mediumish body and moderate carbonation. Solid.

330ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a large beige head, which lasts well and leaves a little lacing. Bitter dark chocolate malt is overlaid by smoky peat and sweet rum warmth to create an interesting aroma. Mild spice hops up front mix nicely with rum sweetness. This persists into the mid-palate, where it is joined by dark chocolate malt. Bitter cocoa and peat make a pleasant combination in the finish. I was a bit sceptical about using rum and peat in the same beer, but the flavours here work really well together. It could do with just a little more body, but this is otherwise highly enjoyable.

Bottle@ Hilpeä Hauki. Blackish-brown color, lasting tan head. Sweet aroma with some wood and rum notes. Fairly dry, smoky flavor, warming alcohol in the finish. Full body, medium carbonation. Slightly tart mouthfeel. The rum brings an interesting twist.

330ml Bottle. Black colour with a nice covering from a beige head. Aromas of charcoal, sour cherries, roasted malts and wood. Very smokey flavour, with roasted malts and chocolate, with a sweetness from the rum and hints of vanilla. Full bodied and delicious
