COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“I think I’m getting the black lung pop. It’s not very well ventilated down there” This really, really, ridiculously good looking bourbon barrel aged smokey porter will have you gasping for that last breath of clean air before succumbing to the strong roasty smoked flavour of this offering. A beer a long time in the making, the Black Lung will surely have you reaching for that ventilator asking “You can read minds?”

Bottle. Bit of a gusher. Pours balck with huge dark tan coloured head. Bourban type aromas dominate. Plenty of alcohol, vanilla and a touch of smoke. Not too bad. Flavours let it down a bit. High carbonation makes it hard to get much. Perhaps some raosted sweetness and a alcohol on the finish. Carbonation is way to high for me. Not the best beer I had and certainly missing a bit of balance but hey at least they are doing something a little different.

03-JUN-2012, bottle @Papsø tasting. Black with light brown head. Smokey nose. Taste is smoke, roast, brett, tartness, bourbon. Too carbonated. Infected...? Fine but messy.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a huge but fast disappearing dark brown head. The aroma has notes of smoke, bourbon, roasted malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of bacon, smoke, roasted malt, and bread, leading to a dry smokey finish.

33 cl bottle. Pours pitch black with a huge, fizzy and tan head. Aroma is smoked and roasted dark malty. Solid roasted malty and smoked. Warming bourbon note too. Thick smoked and roasted to smooth bourbon dense malty finish.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of maneliquor. Pours an opaque pitch black with a lively if dissipating light brown head. Bourbon and peat in the nose. Medium body, violent carbonation, roast, peat, ink and iodine with an ashy roastiness. Malt bitter finish. Another interesting Moon Dog beer if somewhat out of control! 030612

330ml bottle. This one pours all froth and bubbles. Thick and black in the glass with a deep tan head. Lots of peaty cigar smoke in the aroma, like an overflowing ashtray. The flavour takes your breathe away with a woodsmoke flavour that stays on the palate. Definitely a sipper.

Pours black with a ridiculously large head, even after a gentle pour. Nose shows peat, camp-fire smoke, charcoal. Very cigar-like. Way too much peat though, and the real problem is that there’s an enteric, blue-vein cheese character to it, which only seems to get stronger as you go. The enteric character is not quite as noticeable in the flavours, but there’s still too much peat, smoke and booze. Obviously there’s quality control issues here, and obviously not what the brewer intended. From what I’ve heard though this defect isn’t likely to be a one-off. I’d like to try an uninfected bottle in the future if I can find some, I’d been looking forward to this.

Tried several barrel aged beers now and they don’t always grab me too much, this one stood out, was interesting, and drinkable. Peat, alcohol, dark chocolate, coffee and more flavours, pretty good but probably couldn’t drink too many of them.

Very intriguing beer from a brewer that I know little about. Very smokey and coffee malt taste. I look forward to sampling more beers from moon dog.
