On tap in Santa Rosa. Dark brown appearance with a light brown head. Roasty nose with some light smoke and coffee. Hint of diacetyl. Kind of nutty, caramel, roasty flavor. Light butterscotch. This batch seemed a little dirty but I’m sure it could be a good beer.

Draft. Pours coffee color with small tan head. Aroma is smoke, coffee, roast, mellow bitter chocolate, orange zest. Taste is toasted grain, cocoa, light coffee notes, earthy hops, light sourness, lingering hop bitterness. Big fan.

Tap at FWIBF. Pours a deep brown with pink/red/brown lacing head. Aroma is scotch, brownie and some ash. Taste is slightly smokey with hints of chocolate and candy corn. Light mouth feel which detracts though this is only 5%.

Black with a moderate tan swirl and edgework.
Nose is light roast, liqourice, charred wood tones, dark malt, spice.
Taste comprises dark malt, dark toffee fudge, liqourice stick, light spice, faint herbals, treacle toffee, earthy tones.
Medium bodied, fine carbonation, crisp close.
A most decent schwarz, can see why this is at the top of the style list!

A- Deep black with little to no head.
S- Roasted malt, coffee, hints of vanilla.
T- Tastes very rich, burnt toast, coffee, deep roasted notes.
M- Medium bodied with medium-low carbonation.
D- I get this whenever I see it on tap. It was listed as 4.2% alcohol on the menu and I can’t think of another 4.2% beer with this much flavor or character. Highly recommended.

Pours pitch black with a brown head. Smell is very roasty chocolate coffee with smoke, not to be confused with smoke in a smoked beer. Mouthfeel is nice and light like what you would expect from a clean lager or as clean as you can get with this style of beer. Although I would say technically this is a schwartzbier I would rather call it an American black lager. The flavor profile is way more intense than a german black beer, tastes just like it smells. To me this is my go to beer in the Bay Area.

On tap at Toronado. Pour is dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma and flavor are both of burnt wood, chocolate, creamer, and coffee. Light bodied and light finish.

On tap at Monk’s Kettle. Black with a foamy tan head. Creamy and roasty aroma. Smooth creamy roasty nutty taste. Silky smooth body. Great!

On tap at Toronado San Francisco, pours black with a reddish tinge and a small beige head. Aroma of light coffee, some toasted malt, charcoal, and bitter unsweetened cocoa powder. Flavour is similar, with a wonderful balance of unsweetened cocoa powder and black coffee grounds. Exceedingly dry and fairly light on the palate, making this very easy to drink. Wonderful stuff.

A dark beer with a tan head. A sweet caramel aroma with a little bit of coffee. Smokey, roast flavors of coffee, walnuts, caramel, and bread. Refreshing and tasty.
