"The always superb Old Freddie Walker dark ale serves as the base for this cask matured ale. Matured in Royal Somerset Brandy Casks, this beer is an absolute dream. Full, malty and with biterness superbly balanced by deep caramel and spiced apple flavours. As with all the Moor beers, generous hopping creates a long, lingering finish. This is a must for the beer connoisseurs amongst you. It’s expensive for sure but excellence comes at a price and we feel that it’s worth every penny."

Clear medium to dark brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, chocolate, light alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100604]

Bottle. Its black with a creamy tan head. The aroma is quite fruity, light roasted with some berries and chocolate notes. Nice and complex. The flavour is Berries, some roasted malt, caramel, ripe fruit, sweetness and chocolate. Overal its a very nice and complex brew.

Bottle @ Johnny’s Off License, Rome. Pours black with a creamy bubbly head on top. Vague roast, barrel, vanilla, some apple notes. Smooth and full bodied. Very tasty

Bottle in Johnny’s Off Licence bottleshop at RBESG Rome Day 2. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, apple, sweet malts. Flavour is same with a nice roasted bitter finish with some vanilla. Just a bit thin. Good.

0.66 l bottle at Pikkulintu. Sweet perfumed aroma with licorice and oak, deep rich aroma. Sweet flavor with chocolate, licorice, minerals (stone) and raisins. Warming palate. Exciting beer, hard to describe what is going on here.

(Bottle, 0.66 l, at Pikkulintu) Poured almost black with medium sized and light brown head. Aroma contained roastedness, apples and ash. Palate was full bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were roastedness, apples, chocolate, hops, mild sourness, fruitiness and bitterness. Aftertaste was bit ashy and mildly bitter.

Dark brown color, small brown head. Interesting aroma of toasted malts and apple. Palate is suprisingy light. Some stout-like flavors, but more cidery, apple, pear. Quite strong warming alcohol in the aftertaste. Nice although this beer is quite boozy.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2010 660ml bottle from Darts Farm, ceremonially cracked open back at The Penguin with Octo, Helen and Keith. As good as pitch with a slim tan swirl. Some Hubba Bubba on the nostril over creamy oak, orange rind, burnt toast, Allsorts, lovely deep cocoa-dusted peardrop; Black Jacks once you get down to the warm dregs. Dusty, plummy and well-roasted with the comforting twang of apple bubblegum right through it. Zero alcohol heat, waft of peardrop esters, well-watered solvent and charcoal to finish; burnt pistachio for dessert. Sumptuous and fully-formed like it’s been brewed like this for a hundred years. Right up there with Old Chimneys and Beowulf in my top 5 of strong English beers; the class, creamy oak and underplayed fruitiness imparted by the cider brandy barrel make total sense, harmonising perfectly with the plummy, appley fruit often found swimming around in an English stout or porter. Complex, sexy, expensive English effortlessly (but unexpectedly) eclipsing Pannepot Grand Reserva 2005 to earn the honour of being my 3K rate. Precisely the kind of beer that drives you to drink 3,000 of the bloody things in the hope that maybe, just maybe, 1 of the next 10, 100 or 1000 will be just as good, or even better....

Thanks to Phil_l for this at Pre ZBF 2010. Very dark brown, lasting tan head. Pretty good malts on this. Not a lot of the promised cider brandy, a little maybe. Good malts though.
