COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Style: Black Ale Draught ABV: 4.5% Illusion is our latest creation, which is inspired by the awesome new beer style created in the States known as Imperial Black Ale. We really admire the profile of this new style but wanted a session strength version. We brewed ours at 4.5% instead of the typical 8%+, but wanted to retain the unique flavour profile. We sourced the special malt required from Germany and the hops from America to create a beer of stunning depth and complexity. The beer is black in appearance but lacks the acrid flavours associated with all other dark beers. This is achieved through use of the special German malt. The hop aromas and flavours are very intense, which we achieve through a major dose of dry-hopping in the cask. The result is a beer that wraps all the wonderful hop profiles of a pale ale inside a silky black exterior. It is truly an Illusion that deceives your eyes and dazzles your taste buds. Due to the rare nature of these special ingredients it is a limited release beer, but we are looking at making it more regularly available if possible.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a murky dark brown with a reddish hue and a frothy light tan head. The aroma is spicy grass hop, roasted malt and a little chocolate. The flavour is medium bitter with a refreshing nettle hop palate. Medium bodied, average carbonation with a thin texture. Super refreshing and flavour packed.

Bottle shared thanks to Jmgreenuk. Pours dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma of roast, milk chocolate, grassy hops, citrus. Flavour is moderate sweet and moderate to heavy bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

660ml bottle (shared by FatPhil, thanks). Dark brown color. Medium size, off-white head, stays forever. Hops, fruity, roasted malts in aroma. Smells nice. Moderate roast, hops, hazelnuts in flavor. Dry hoppy aftertaste. Very drinkable.

Really deep, dark red - essentially black. with a thin-medium off-white head. Roast malt and pretty big hops. Taste is light sweet with a decent amount of bitterness and medium to long duration. Oily texture, could be thicker, light carbonation. Pretty nice black IPA.

600ml bottle (Drink Shop, Tallinn)
Woh, now that’s a lovely aroma, tons of fruity hops, but lovely sweet malts. Nearly black, pewsistent tight tan head. Lovely taste too, has everything- nice roast, sweeting malts, crisp fruity citrussy and piney hops. Good example of a dark hoppy beer, drinkability high, even compared to the hoppy dark beers that pack a higher octane rating. Burntness judged perfectly, hops judged perfectly, this is everything I want apart from the "wow" factor. Drinkability *MASSIVE*. Next bottle is for me on my own!

Tap at Death Manchester. Very interesting beer, very hopful. Yet malty and roasty. Certainly worth trying but not amazing.

660ml bottle @ home. Ordered from Ales By Mail. This is good, very nice with this ABV. Of course more body would be nice, but you see less black ipa with this ABV.

650mL bottle, pours black with an amber tinge and a large lingering beige head. Nose brings out light roast, some metallic notes, and moderate dry hops. Flavour is very dry, with both roasted malt and hops acting in equal unison on this one. Not that intense in flavours, but rather subdued. Palate is bone dry, with fairly lively carbonation. Finishes on dry, roasty and slightly hoppy notes. Good stuff - just missing a little oomph.

.66 bottle. Balck. Really lovely nose- grapefruit citrus hops, some green herbals, all with a good brown chocolate malt backing. Lightish body, dry, somewhat bitter. Hoopy remnants, roasty chocolate. A bit too dry, leafy hoppy for my taste, but overall a very tasty and nice black IPA. Feels fresh, flavourful. Fuller body would be nice.
