COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Style: Black Ale Draught ABV: 4.5% Illusion is our latest creation, which is inspired by the awesome new beer style created in the States known as Imperial Black Ale. We really admire the profile of this new style but wanted a session strength version. We brewed ours at 4.5% instead of the typical 8%+, but wanted to retain the unique flavour profile. We sourced the special malt required from Germany and the hops from America to create a beer of stunning depth and complexity. The beer is black in appearance but lacks the acrid flavours associated with all other dark beers. This is achieved through use of the special German malt. The hop aromas and flavours are very intense, which we achieve through a major dose of dry-hopping in the cask. The result is a beer that wraps all the wonderful hop profiles of a pale ale inside a silky black exterior. It is truly an Illusion that deceives your eyes and dazzles your taste buds. Due to the rare nature of these special ingredients it is a limited release beer, but we are looking at making it more regularly available if possible.

Bottle. Pours dark ruby with a chocolate head that settles to a thin ring. On the schnoz is tropical fruit, mango, apricot, roasty slightly smokey coffee if you sniff hard enough. Not a heavy mouthfeel which is representative of the ABV, but doesn’t lack flavour, sweet up front, candied fruit, with the hoppy piney bitterness creeping up on you at the finish. Obviously it doesn’t have the smack-you-in-the-face flavour of a 7% BIPA, but as the bottle says; sessionable BIPA. Indeed!

An interesting beer, not as hoppy and big as most Black IPA’s I have tasted. Dry stout like in appearance and flavour with some moderate hop aroma. A dry finish and not a bad beer.

Bottle. Black with a small head. Hoppy and slightly fruity. Well balanced and well bootled. An all round classy beer up to the high standards of this brewery.

Mmmm, black IPA. The current darling of craft beer (although Saison is perhaps nipping at its heels!) And this one is a goodie. Nose of fireplace, coffee, toast and tropical fruits - mainly mango. Pours a deep dark brown with a fluffy creamy head. Flavour is rich, deep, full of flavour and dark notes but balanced well with fresh citrus and pine from the hops. Finish is very strong, lingering with more dark notes and a juicy bitterness. Very good.

Bottled 26/03/13. A black coloured beer with a ruby hue and a little grey head. A very bitter and quite dry BIPA. Has a good citrussy hoppy aroma but it’s not as full or pronounced as others. A very bitter mouth which isn’t as rounded as you’d like; the malts really struggle to do their thing. It’s tasty but a little disappointing.

Bottle, Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Deep dark brown looks with a thin off white head. Dark malts and hops ahoy nose-wise. Robust body. Flavour had roasted malts, citrus and piney hops aplenty. Spot on bitterness. Cracking stuff and a fine example of a great style.

660ml bottle from Great Grog. Almost black colour, big beige head. Woody tar hop aroma. Pine biscuit hop flavour. Big hoppy aftertaste. This a a great one.

Tap at Homo Sibaris, served in shaker (50cl). Pours a black colour with medium beige head. Aroma is citrusy hops with hints of nuts (kinda dryness perception). The flavour is definetely citrusy with roasted malts (subtle), really bitter considering its dark colour. The effect is like a roasty bitterness. Palate is quite dry, but not disappointing. Medium body, average carbonation. Good.

Draft at BBF. Dark cloudy maroon color, fluffy tan head. Aroma of pine boughs dipped in coffee. Taste is bitter cocoa and coffee grounds.
