Style: Black Ale Draught ABV: 4.5% Illusion is our latest creation, which is inspired by the awesome new beer style created in the States known as Imperial Black Ale. We really admire the profile of this new style but wanted a session strength version. We brewed ours at 4.5% instead of the typical 8%+, but wanted to retain the unique flavour profile. We sourced the special malt required from Germany and the hops from America to create a beer of stunning depth and complexity. The beer is black in appearance but lacks the acrid flavours associated with all other dark beers. This is achieved through use of the special German malt. The hop aromas and flavours are very intense, which we achieve through a major dose of dry-hopping in the cask. The result is a beer that wraps all the wonderful hop profiles of a pale ale inside a silky black exterior. It is truly an Illusion that deceives your eyes and dazzles your taste buds. Due to the rare nature of these special ingredients it is a limited release beer, but we are looking at making it more regularly available if possible.

660 ml bottle @ Christianssand Brygghus. A dark amber body with a dense beige head. Aroma of light roasted malt, caramel and fruity hops. Flavor is nice roasted malt, citric fruity with pleasant bitterness. Nothing really complicated here, but delicately balanced mix of dark malt and hops at a modest alcohol level. Nice, tasty, pleasant and impressive.

Very nice fruity aroma, sadly though the taste is not nearly as good and somewhat empty bitter.

Shared by martjoobolut, thanks! Black beer, brown head. Nose is hops, citrus, cocoa powder, roast, malt. Flavor is roast, malt, some chocolate hints, assertive roasty-hoppy bitterness in the finish. Simplistic and roasty, light palate.

Mildly fruity aroma with a hint of burnt toast. Opaque deep brown with a lingering off-white head. Dark slightly smoky stonefruity flavours with a carbon linger at the back of the tongue. Very subtle reminsicsnce of wet flannel, but thatís ok and might just be me.

In The Macc, Macclesfield. Very dark brown with a medium off white to tan head. Aroma has hops, grassy piney stuff, roasted malts. Flavour has quite a bitter finish. Decent is my thorough appraisal.

Appearance: black, clear with a medium sized and rather quickly dropping light tan head that leaves great lacing on the glass.
Aroma: very hoppy, resinous, citrus, with a little bit of roastiness. Notes of caramel and coffee are in the back, very subtle.
Taste: tastes almost like a regular IPA at first. Itís pretty hoppy, citrusy, thereís pine, resin, some sweet notes and then comes the roastiness. So this is basically how a beer in this style shoud taste. In many Black IPAs the roastiness is too big, here itís on almost perfect level. Medium to high, long lasting bitterness.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied, medium to soft carbonation.
Overall: I really enjoyed this one. Itís a light, highly drinkable beer with great hoppy aroma, nice, almost pure IPA-ish taste with just a hint of roastiness. This one is one of the best beers in this style that Iíve ever had. Highly recommended!

660 ml bottle from Ales By Mail, served in a pint glass. Almost black in colour, just some dark brown tinges in the glass base, with a nice, creamy and persistent light beige head. Great lacing. In a dark room, I would probably say that this was a typical IPA. Just a tiny tiny hint of roasted malts, perhaps some smoke/ash notes as well, but the nose is dominated by herbal hops, tropical fruits in abundance, citrus, resin and pine needles. Completely different in the mouth, where a resiny, bitter and slightly astringency part is perfectly complemented by a chocolaty, toasted and dark coffee part. Burnt caramel and almost vanilla-like aftertaste. Average carbonation, light body and creamy texture. One of the best, and true (imho) to style BIPA, almost as good as Magic Rock 8 Ball which is still my favourite. A cracking beer anyway!

Bottle. Black with foamy off-white head. Fruity aroma with a hint of smoke. The bitter grapefruit hops are nice balanced with blackberry, wheat, liquorice and some malty chocolate. Sweetness at the front, with a long bitter finish. It does lack body, but Iím not complaining, as at under 5% I could drink this all day.
