Style: Black Ale Draught ABV: 4.7% Illusion is our latest creation, which is inspired by the awesome new beer style created in the States known as Imperial Black Ale. We really admire the profile of this new style but wanted a session strength version. We brewed ours at 4.5% instead of the typical 8%+, but wanted to retain the unique flavour profile. We sourced the special malt required from Germany and the hops from America to create a beer of stunning depth and complexity. The beer is black in appearance but lacks the acrid flavours associated with all other dark beers. This is achieved through use of the special German malt. The hop aromas and flavours are very intense, which we achieve through a major dose of dry-hopping in the cask. The result is a beer that wraps all the wonderful hop profiles of a pale ale inside a silky black exterior. It is truly an Illusion that deceives your eyes and dazzles your taste buds. Due to the rare nature of these special ingredients it is a limited release beer, but we are looking at making it more regularly available if possible.

660ml bottle pours black in color with a 2 finger off-white head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is big on citrus with some light toasted grains. Taste is a bold grapefruit hop bitterness with some malty and fruity sweetness underneath. There is some toasted notes as well. Medium bodied with adequate carbonation leaving a pleasing sensation on the palate. Very satisfying brew.

0,33l can at home courtesy of minutemat, big thanks. ABV 4.5%. BB 07/2016. black color, medium big tan head. strong smell of grass and pines, a bit soapy, also some spices, roast and earthy notes, hints of chocolate. nice smell. light body, rather bubbly carbonation, light mouthfeel. tastes rather strong of grass and pines, after a while the bitterness mellows away, some earthy / soapy and light fruity notes come through. also has light roast notes, a bit of ash, light charcoal, fruits include tangerine, oranges, also light citric notes, also rather peppery. finishes quite peppery and with some earthy and grass notes. gets quite fruity and mellow on the aftertaste. wow, lovely beer. nice smell, the taste starts quite harsh bitter (for me almost a bit too harsh), but it mellows down very nicely to nice roast / earthy notes, and quite nice and soft fruity aftertaste. Just at the beginning I would wish for a bit more body to balance the hops, but after its a great experience. Lovely beer, especially considering the ABV. There are a lot of 10%-ers that do not bring so much flavor to the table. gimme more.

2015-09-20. Black body with a modest creamy tan head. 3+ Aroma of dusty toasty milk chocolate. Very mild green hop character. Flavour has a dusty toasty cocoa quality to it, and a good amount of green leafy hops. 7+ Very smooth average bodied palate, soft carbonation. Solid take on the style. Tap vs cask not indicated, at Royal Navy Volunteer, Bristol.

330ml can at home, BB July 2016, 4.5%. Black, big foamy tan head, thick lacing. Aroma is fairly light with cola, light metallics. Body is medium to light, soft carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is cola, dried flowers, dry chalky finish with some background watery ashtray notes. Comes across as watery at times, but it’s a nice sessionable BIPA. Restrained, balanced. Tasty.

Tap at The Cock (Hackney). Pours pitch black with little beige head, whitch retains for quite a long while. Not too strong flavour, quite bitter aftertaste though. Good choice if you’re looking for a lighter version of a generally stronger, more complex style. Not a big deal for me anyway.

BOTTLE 66 CL. Past BB 20-MAY-2015. Hazy red-brown, beige head. Quite a hoppy dank aroma, despite past BB date, light caramel and almost nothing „black”. The taste is light sweet, dank hops, light to moderate hop bitterness with a weird moldy and fruity note to it. About the only thing that reminds you it’s „black” is the ashy edge in the after-taste. Overall, solid.

Cask at Euston tap opaque black coloured pour with a lasting g tidy light tam head. Aroma is a nice mix of charred roast grains, piney hip and fruity strawberry, maybe a little red berry on the nose. Flavour is composed of semi sweet malts wood, vanilla, light roast, piney hop, little grassy. Happy for the black IPA tick. Palate is medium light bodied, tangy hop bitterness, moderate to low carbonation.
