COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Style: Black Ale Draught ABV: 4.5% Illusion is our latest creation, which is inspired by the awesome new beer style created in the States known as Imperial Black Ale. We really admire the profile of this new style but wanted a session strength version. We brewed ours at 4.5% instead of the typical 8%+, but wanted to retain the unique flavour profile. We sourced the special malt required from Germany and the hops from America to create a beer of stunning depth and complexity. The beer is black in appearance but lacks the acrid flavours associated with all other dark beers. This is achieved through use of the special German malt. The hop aromas and flavours are very intense, which we achieve through a major dose of dry-hopping in the cask. The result is a beer that wraps all the wonderful hop profiles of a pale ale inside a silky black exterior. It is truly an Illusion that deceives your eyes and dazzles your taste buds. Due to the rare nature of these special ingredients it is a limited release beer, but we are looking at making it more regularly available if possible.

660ml bottle pours black in color with a 2 finger off-white head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is big on citrus with some light toasted grains. Taste is a bold grapefruit hop bitterness with some malty and fruity sweetness underneath. There is some toasted notes as well. Medium bodied with adequate carbonation leaving a pleasing sensation on the palate. Very satisfying brew.

Drunk at Rievoca Beershop (Vimodrone, Milan, Italy) on tap and available also in bottle. Obviously very black, whit a brown-beige quite persistant head. Nose is very fruity, with some grass and herb from the pacific hops. Once in your mouth it taste very bitter with a nice corrispondance between nose and mouth. Again a lot of fruit with some herbal and grass tastes in the end. Low abv and -quite- low carbonation make it so drinkable even if the biterness is very high. Surely to try if you love hops and bitterness.

Very nice fruity aroma, sadly though the taste is not nearly as good and somewhat empty bitter.

0,66L bottle, BB 30.03.2015. Pours dark brown-black with light tan head. The head stays. Aroma is roast, fruits, and hops. Taste is roast, coffee bitter, pine with some sour notes. Finish is intense roast bitter. Overall: very nice brew.

Shared by martjoobolut, thanks! Black beer, brown head. Nose is hops, citrus, cocoa powder, roast, malt. Flavor is roast, malt, some chocolate hints, assertive roasty-hoppy bitterness in the finish. Simplistic and roasty, light palate.

Mildly fruity aroma with a hint of burnt toast. Opaque deep brown with a lingering off-white head. Dark slightly smoky stonefruity flavours with a carbon linger at the back of the tongue. Very subtle reminsicsnce of wet flannel, but that’s ok and might just be me.

In The Macc, Macclesfield. Very dark brown with a medium off white to tan head. Aroma has hops, grassy piney stuff, roasted malts. Flavour has quite a bitter finish. Decent is my thorough appraisal.

Appearance: black, clear with a medium sized and rather quickly dropping light tan head that leaves great lacing on the glass.
Aroma: very hoppy, resinous, citrus, with a little bit of roastiness. Notes of caramel and coffee are in the back, very subtle.
Taste: tastes almost like a regular IPA at first. It’s pretty hoppy, citrusy, there’s pine, resin, some sweet notes and then comes the roastiness. So this is basically how a beer in this style shoud taste. In many Black IPAs the roastiness is too big, here it’s on almost perfect level. Medium to high, long lasting bitterness.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied, medium to soft carbonation.
Overall: I really enjoyed this one. It’s a light, highly drinkable beer with great hoppy aroma, nice, almost pure IPA-ish taste with just a hint of roastiness. This one is one of the best beers in this style that I’ve ever had. Highly recommended!
