3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at Battersea Beer Festival, 11th Feb 2009. Pure black with not much of a head. Rich, wine-like aroma with evident alcohol but tempered by sweet molasses and malt notes. Good taste of stewed fruits, sultanas and tart berries. Palate for sipping not quaffing. Good stuff.

Cask (Gallows Bird, Espoo, RealAle05)
Barley-wine-like sweet aroma. Sweet and fruity in the taste too, and undeniably quite strong. We blew hot and cold during this one. At it’s best it was fantastic (3.6+), but it was a bit over-powering, and we lost the details after a while. Should rerate.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: OCT 28, 2009 Matured for 6 months in cask (these Moor beers mature at a steady rate but still retain an incredible freshness about them), this is a beaut. Very dark, close to black with a head the colour of the crema of a well made espresso. Roast and smoky aroma with some cherry and prune fruit alongside some earthy hops and if you really look for it a citrus note (found after 3 pints, but found again when sober!). Good mouthfeel and carbonation with a creamy but full body. Obvious flavours of coffee and chocolate are in abundance with vine fruit, liqourice, smoke and generous bitterness. Lasting smokey, fruit, liqourice, bitter finish. A rich well matured fruitcake of a beer.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask, Turf Tavern, Oxford. Ultra-fine tan head, shiny black. Vanilla, cream, green olives, and coffee aroma. Sweet cream flavor with green grapes, iodine, fine roast and a lingering chalky finish. Full soft palate, silkly in a way that makes me think it would be nice poured over strawberries. Really fun to find something this interesting on at a random visit to Turf.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Cask conditioned at the Royal Oak, Bath 21/2/08. Near black with a moderate tan head. Aroma of dark fruits, marzipan, tobacco and a whiff of roastiness. The mouth feel was full and vinous, with some more chunky sweetness, chocolate, dark fruit and a lingering, warming alcohol finish. The best beer I have drunk for many months.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask @ Battersea Beer Festival ’08. Colour is a murky dark brown / black with beige head. The aroma is dominated by a nice smoky, chocolate, coffee & roasted malts blend. The taste is of dark fruits, chocolate, coffee. Some slight alcohol on the palette but this fades to leave a pleasant smoky, malty finish. A well made beer that’s worth trying.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
cask @ Battersea Beer Festival 2008. Really full force chocolate and coffee aroma with hints of roasted malt in the background. Pours a pitch brown beer with a small beige head. Body is medium and oily. Taste is very chocolatey with hops also coming to the fore, coffee, malt are strong flavours too. Finish is very smokey with a hint of caramel. Overall fantastic although it is not that complex.

Comments: A pretty gorgeous smelling old ale whose palate does not deserve the same claims, heading in too many directions at once.
