Rye adds a distinctive, spicy flavour to beer that is both interesting and enjoyable. It’s even better when paired with smoked malt. If you’re not used to smoked beer it may come as a bit of a surprise. Don’t worry, by the third one you’ll be hooked and book a ticket to Bamberg. Book an extra one for me please.

Amber red body, fine pillowy creamy head. Very nice smoke, very bamberg, cereal like, bit bacon. Taste isn’t AS smokey, more bready. And a nice herbal tea bitterness. Bit thin perhaps. Good brew, nice and clear enough. (33cl can at M Café Leuven)

Cask at the Victoria, Birmingham. Poured a slightly light amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is light fruit, some spicy smoke, light aniseed. The flavour is floral bitter with a light, smooth, spicy floral hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation.

330ml can: (In a Chimay goblet). Nose is pretty Rauchbier in character , smoked ham glides up my nose and drips bacon fat on my brain ... A vibrant fire orange liquid , and a decent short lived creamy white head ; I have two cans of this to sink in the next 20 mins ... First sip. Meaty burnt smokiness , notes lead toward rich hop dryness -this is a nice fucken compliment to the smoked malt emphasis . Any rye is kinda mild here . If the smoke notes were turned up a little more this would get a "4" score .

Very cloudy browny golden with a decent taught white cap. Nose is rich hammy sweet smoke. Initial taste is lean lemony charred brightness and creamy bitter backbone. Soft enough carbonation and a long, spicy mouthfeel. Finishes a bit more open, Chorizo spicy chewy and linger soft sweet Rye and a bit too creamy sickly for more than a third. Keg, Brewdog, Edinburgh.

Bottle. Smoke is more remarkable in taste than in aroma. Very good drink ability. Rye malts give nice base for smokiness. Like it.

Pours hazy orange with medium head, leaves nice lacing. Aroma: pleasant, but no too dominating smoky-woody aroma, some plums in dried fruit in the background, like peaches, plums, raisins etc. Taste: smoky, a bit malty. Very drinkable.
