Rye adds a distinctive, spicy flavour to beer that is both interesting and enjoyable. It’s even better when paired with smoked malt. If you’re not used to smoked beer it may come as a bit of a surprise. Don’t worry, by the third one you’ll be hooked and book a ticket to Bamberg. Book an extra one for me please.

Terrific spicy smoked rye ale. Cloudy amber color. Spiced and perfectly balenced and extremely well balenced. Malt forward.

Can from Aimee’s Winehouse, pours red-brown with a tight beige foam, aromas hint to toasted orange, toffee and bonfire ashes. On the palate there’s light wood smoke, a touch of cinder toffee and spice, and a dry, slightly resiny bitterness.

Can from Coppers, Newcastle. Hazy orange-amber coloured with a thin white head. It has a gentle smoked beechwood, malty and pine flavour followed by earthy notes and a smooth spicy finish. Very unusual and good.

Red colour, slightly beige head. Aroma of smoke, a bit of citrus, thyme, bread. Taste is light sweet, slightly tart, slightly bitter, very well balanced. Smokey and fruty flavours. Light to medium body, slick to oily texture, average carbonation. Pretty nice.

Smoked food smell and taste, taste has some fruityness in the smoke. Now I know I’m not a fan of Smokey beers.

Keg at The Moor Brewery Tap, Bristol. Clear amber with white head. There is a slight smokiness to this from the start, thankfully, peaty, earthy, bon-fire hints. Sweet malts round the whole beer off, some fruitiness, some caramel. Pretty decent beer.
