| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Nov 5, 2003 Pours a dark black/brown color with average sized head and good lacing. The aroma is largely roasted with a strong coffee presence. The chocolate notes are there, but hard to detect. The flavor screams forward a perfectly balanced smokyness. Finishes a little watery and metallic, but overall this was a well built mild ale, a unique experience for me. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 4, 2003 Pours dark brown with ruby edges, a small head that vanishes quickly, and quite a bit of carbonation. Aroma is light coffee, just like a mocha frappacino, and some hints of chocolate. Smoky flavors of roast malt, very mild fruit, maybe grape/raisin. Fuzzy mouthfeel, finishes a bit watery. Not bad at all. urbnhautebourg (974), Annapolis, Maryland, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 3, 2003 Huge head and black body make this a terrribly nice looking beer. Light licorice and coffee flavors with a creamy palate. Incredible lace. Having recently had an 11% Belgian strong ale which had very little flavor this 3.4 percenter is mind boggling. I would preffer this to many full strength stouts. Superb. igneous1 (1374), Davenport, Iowa, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 31, 2003 dark brown with a red tint, no head on mine. aroma is slight roasted with a smoky flavor. hops are barely perceptible in the flavor. it's almost as if the chocolates in this are smoked. not at all bad JPDIPSO (4897), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Oct 21, 2003 Dark, dark brown with a moderate tan head. sorhgum and corn meal aroma, hints of sulfur. Very much like licking a match after it has been extinguished. Tar malt, and burnt grains. Somewhat like some american darks in that they use the grains to create the darkness. this has a bit more depth, just a bit. I still think I'm sucking on blowout candle, yet I think I could sit in the pub and imbibe on this all day. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 18, 2003 Very dry, and somewhat bland beer. Definetly "mild", but the malts are pleasant and roasty. There's really not a whole lot to talk about with this beer. It looked like a nice stout. notalush (2647), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Oct 17, 2003 Nearly stout-like blackness, with an impressive lacing - peaty aroma - dry, crisp and refreshing - mild chocolate/coffee flavors, and a flavor I can only describe as "creamy smoke," of course that doesn't sound tasty, but really, it is - not a fan of mild ales, but this is pretty decent.
