Was surprised at this being fairly bland-tasting. Looked a nice pint, not a lot of aroma to it. Had a thin but lasting head. Not unpleasant, just a bit mediocre to my taste.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Cask @ The Bree Louise. The pour’s deep brown with a tiny tan head. The nose is soy sauce and sugary chocolate syrup. The taste is light chocolate maltiness, some vinous red berries and general fruits. Hints of toffee and roast coffee. The mouthfeel’s thin and a bit lifeless. Overall, not great!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
(cask @ Coopers , Rochester) Resembled red wine in color , with a small beige pool of foam resting above it nicely; A beer that was basically like a session stout with less alcohol or body, i was in the mood after the dull golden ale i’d been subjected to just before . First few sips are chocolate notes , under this leading your palate toward dark fruit(berrries or currant) and a refreshing dry bitterness . A pleasant little dark ale -tepid but good for it.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tasted this in the Fox & Hounds, Houston in May 2004. Cask, handpump dispense. Dull black in colour with ruby highlights and a thin buff creamy white head. Slight whiff of burnt toast in the short aroma. Thin oily mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a burnt toast and chocolate powder flavours which rapidly fade to reveal sweet notes of soft caramel and juicy blackcurrant fruit. Dusty hop prickle present in the very short aftertaste. Finish is malty with dry cask notes coming through. An ok session mild and well recommended.
