Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is hazy medium brown. Aroma is lightly malty (bread, caramel, nuts), with light notes of banana, dirty dish rag, clove, hint of wet dog hair. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, slightly unclean.

Flip top bottle and served in my Aventinus glass: Poured a muddy brown hue with yellowish highlights topped by a huge frothy off-white head and left excellent lace work on the glassware. The nose detected toasted and smoked malting, non-aromatic pipe tobacco, walnut, banana and clove yeasty esters, and other earthy vapors. The taste is much more hefe and less dunkel with a heavy note of banana and acidic sourness over a bready malt and yeast driven base. There is some smoke towards the finish which does help in balance and complexity. The mouth feel is less challenging with a watery dry finish and soft carbonation. A entry level dunkelweizen more than a top example of the genre. Quaffable enough for a ratebeerian try.

UPDATED: JUL 8, 2007 clear reddish amber with a medium sized fizzy off-white head. sweet tropical fruit, candy, banana aroma. very carbonated. big banana flavor but not a lot of chocolaty dark malts. hints of brown sugar. if i wouldn’t have looked at it, i would have called it a regular hefeweizen. 7/8/07 re-rate: pours a nice brown with a large creamy light tan head. very sweet sugary aroma of milk duds and toffee and a hint of metallic. flavor is quite tangy/sour with notes of caramel and milk chocolate. also some metallic. VERY different since i tasted it a year ago. in fact this is completely different(so was the lager hell). must have made some big changes at the brewery. tastes more like a dunkel but still has some problems. appearance changed from 3 to 4.

Labelled under the schwarze weisse. Pours a deep brown with white fluffy head. Good aroma of bananaclovey spice, phenols, fruity esters, and cidery. Nice toasted and nutty malt character with light caramel hints. More yeast phenols and esters, but overall the flavor is very light compared to the aroma. Weak body and mouthfeel. Ok overall.

Flip top bottle. Large frothy, fizzy ivory hue head that mostly diminished, poor lacing, carbonation, hazy, and a reddish brown hue. Smokey, fruity, clove, and spicy nose. Nicely done. Ditto for the flavor. Smooth mouthfeel and light-medium body.

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2007 Bottle... NTB Ernesto Festo ’06... Murky caramel-colored ale with a large, frothy, off-white head. Excellent retention. The aroma has all your typical hefe esters and phenols (banana, pear and clove), chocolate, cinnamon and light smoke. The flavor is about the same with fairly good balance. Light to medium-bodied and fizzy. Short, crisp, clean finish. Better than expected. Surprisingly refreshing on a hot, sunny Cape Fear/Southern N.C. beach day!

Bottle from Super Saver. This one was a complete mess. Hazy dark brown pour with medium off-white head. Aroma of tart fruit, caramel malt, some pear, clove, banana. The taste was tart, somewhat fruity, with some brown sugary notes. As it warmed, it just seemed to fall apart, with a total lack of complexity or balance. Points for originality here, but this one didn’t work for me.

Interesting... The listing is called Weissbier Dunkel, the pictured label reads Dunkle Weisse, and my bottle is Schwarze Weisse.

It pours a hazy light brown with a tall rocky head. Good lacing. The aroma has a strong, bready yeast content covering caramel/toffee malt and old banana, peels and all. There’s also a slight sour milk smell. The flavor is banana with a lightly roasted malt and a touch of smokiness and a mild bitterness that develops in the finish. Just in time for the Summer.

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2009 Pours hazy light amber with orangish hues and a big foamy tan head. Notes of clove, caramel, and mild banana. Taste tends more towards bread dough, phenols and sweet yeast, Medium bodied with lush carbonation. My first bottle of this beer was old and oxidized, which made the beer have more chlorine and plastic flavors. This bottle was fresh and delicious. 2006.06.11: = 3.1 2009.07.31: = 3.7 2009.07.31: Ar 7 Ap 3 Ta 7 Mf 4 Ov 14

Rating for Moosbacher Schwarze Weisse at 5.0%, as seen <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/beerimages/full_size/ />
Clear (hazing late) coppery/brown with a spongy, off-white head that faded rocky and laced wide. Yeasty, dusty banana aroma with toffee and roasty grains that take on a smoky persona late. Hint of metallica to start but a flavorful smoky banana follows. A bit thin but the mouthfeel is overall creamy. Lingers sour with mild bitterness and savory notes. Smokiness truly comes out late in the flavor but the yeasts get a little offensive as well.
