UPDATED: OCT 13, 2008 Sampled on draught at the brewpub in Wisconsin Dells as "Moosejaw Pumpkin Spice Ale." Pours a clear orange-copper amber brew with a creamy off-white head that slowly dissolves to a white ring with some spotty lacing. Aroma of multi-grain malt, pumpkin pie filling with a touch of nutmeg, cinnamon and some grassy hops. Taste is medium bodied, lightly carbonated with a good balance of malt and pumpkin pie filling flavor. Finish is semi-dry with a pumpkin pie filling aftertaste flavor. The 2007 year’s batch is 5.2% abv which is pretty decent. The 2008 vintage has more pumpkin filling flavor and very little bitterness.

Dark copper color with a modest light tan head. Too cold as all the beers at this place are (cold lines - not necessarily bad, coupled with frosted glass -almost always bad). Dark caramel and dry pumpkin spice aromas. Dry spices dominate the flavor with not the normal overpowering ginger and cinnamon, but a decent dry nutmeg. A slightly different twist. Darker and a touch richer than some of the more recent samplings out this year. Decent enough for my pizza with the kids.

Another growler courtesy of Skyview, of course. Clear reddish-brown color with no head. Aroma of cloves and allspice. Great taste of pumpkin, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Very malty and caramelly. Freaking fantastic pumpkin ale. Bravo!

Thanks to Skyview for this one. One of Moosejaw’s best products. The aroma has abundant nutmeg and cinnamon. Cloudy brown color and fairly thin body that is fine for this style. Malt and sugar in the flavor as well as more cinnamon and mild pumpkin pie flavor.

Draft at OF. Dark brown amber color. Thick beige head. Lots of cinnamon in the aroma. Smooth and mellow for the style. Deep malt tones. Middle of the road, inoffensive. Pumpkin pie spice and vanilla flavors. OK, but not world class by any means.

Red-orange in color with a medium-sized off-white head. Slight pumpkin pie spice aroma with some brown-sugary butternut squash. Spicy flavor, much more flavorful than most other pumpkin beers I’ve had the pleasure of tasting - generous use of nutmeg and cinnamon with noticeably rich caramel malts. Mild-to-moderate carbonation. I have to say that I was impressed - too many other pumpkin beers try bombarding you with so many spices that it ends up being a baker’s nightmare; this seems rather well though-out and nicely balanced.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
[Growler, thanks Skyview] I like pumpkin pie and pumpkin beers, and had this from the same growler as JK and badgerben, so it is strange how different of a take I got on it. Pours cloudy orange-brown with a small tan head. Aroma is lightly spiced with no sign of pumpkin. Taste is very unusual--there was nothing but a light, bitter almost nuttiness when first poured before the pumpkin spices revealed what type of beer this really was. I once again got no pumpkin from the taste. A below-average pumpkin beer.

(growler thanks Skyview) Pours brown with a tan head. Spiced aroma of mutmeg and cinnamon, but I couldn’t get any pumpkin out of it at all. Same as the aroma the taste was all spice and no pumpkin at all. 110 lbs. of pumpkin? I couldn’t detect it.
