Commercial Description:
A deep-red, full-bodied, malty ale heavily hopped with Centennial hops to produce a citrusy, spruce-like flavor and aroma. A final dose of Centennail hops in the conditioning tank lends an India Pale Ale-like aroma to the finished beer.

6/19/2009: For the record, Bear Tooth Ale is a wonderful Northwest-style Red IPA. It is definitely not a Brown Ale! Anyways, it has a big, resiny, hopped-up aroma with plenty of caramel and toffee malt also detectable in the nose. Its color is a reddish amber and it has a lasting beige head. The flavor has a chewy caramel maltiness underneath lots and lots of great pine, resiny, earthy, citrus hops. This beer is smooth and medium-bodied. I daresay that it would even consider it to be a contender as a session beer. I would definitely sit around and drink it non-stop all day! It’s a damn tasty brew!

Draught (sample) at The Moose’s Tooth in Anchorage, Alaska. Rating #12 for this beer.

Pours light brown. Light head. Malty but with good hop taste. Citrusy and piney. Light to medium bodied, smooth finish. Similar to their Midtown brown ale but hopped up a lot more.

Pours brown into the glass with minimal white head. Aroma has plenty of piney hops with a hint of toasted grains. Flavor is somewhat roasty with a lot of hop presence that really makes this beer very tasty and enjoyable.

[1687-20080906] Tap. Aroma has mild fruitiness. Slightly hazy, amber red body with quick foamy white bubbles. Mild fruit and grainy bitter malt flavour. Medium body is a little boozy. Good.

2008-09-06. Dark amber body with a small off white head. Ɠ+) Mild aroma, light hops and a touch of alcohol. Flavour is hoppy with a malt base. Average palate. Pretty decent but unexceptional. Kind of surprised to see the high ratings for this one, I didn’t think much of it at the time. Perhaps it would have stuck out more on its own. On tap at the brewpub.

On tap at both The Moose’s Tooth and The Bear’s Tooth. This is a good beer that’s kind of a cross between an Amber and a Pale Ale. Coppery, red color, small whitish head. Aroma of hops and very light malty scent. This is a fairly strong beer in both taste and alcohol content.

17-Jan-08 (Draft: Moose’s Tooth Pub and Pizzeria in Anchorage, AK) Described as a deep-red malty ale, this beer comes across as a West Coast style red ale. It’s toasty, mildly sweet, and somewhat caramely, but wonderfully malty overall. The flavorful malts are balanced by medium bitterness and citrus peel flavor from the hops, with a long-lasting citrusy finish. Medium-full in body with medium to strong carbonation (it’s a somewhat burpy beer) and a nice crisp finish. There isn’t much aroma to the beer, but when swirled, the fresh hop aroma suddenly bursts forth from the glass. Surprisingly, the malts provide lots of flavor but little aroma. Dark ruddy amber in color and fairly hazy with a small, filmy off-white coating atop the beer. Overall, a solid beer with a nice balance of rich malts and crisp hops. After all my visits to Anchorage and the Moose’s Tooth, I’m glad this was finally on tap.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a translucent golden amber with an average bubbly white head. Aroma of citrus, pine, grapefruit, some toasted malts and sugary sweetness. Flavors were a mix of the same. Interesting take on a brown ale.
